OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)Tyrannis and Hippocampus visit an invention convention where Hippocampus is scouted by a god, while Stupendous seeks help from Deliria with unstoning a victim of Medusa.OUR TAKEWe’re eight episodes in now and I am suddenly realizing that a lot of these character names feel like kind of mouthfuls, don’t they? Maybe that’s why I don’t really see people talking about this show very much. Could also be that it’s a new show and still hasn’t fully taken off yet, people being kinda wary of it even if (or possibly BECAUSE) it’s by Dan Harmon, or the fact that it was originally pitched as being heavily involved with NFTs, which they have thankfully seemed to have quietly moved away from. Honestly, I could see this show doing a dated plot about the absurdity of those things in the near future, like Simpsons did for the Treehouse of Horror this year. I should probably start talking about the episode itself, shouldn’t I? Well, it’s a pretty solid plot involving Tyrannis and Hippocampus, where the former learns to appreciate the latter’s inventiveness and the latter learns to appreciate the former’s willingness to stick by them. It’s perfectly fine, nothing very impressive but certainly not bad. Plenty of good mythological humor in there and Hephaestus is a pretty good cautionary tale for Hippo (is anyone gonna call him that?).The B plot basically just ends up with Deliria making a bunch of weird takes on Medusa with the snake hair becoming something else while the body reverses or something. As someone who has gotten a kick out of seeing weird comics about centaur medusas/gorgons who have horses for hair and stuff like that, this definitely tapped into the absurdity of that which only a show set in this setting and dealing with mythical creatures could do. But what’s also worth pointing out is that we have a little bit of focus on Shlub as he tries to maintain and build on his marriage to Deliria. It kinda feels like he’s building a little bit of an arc over time where he has started as a pretty hands off and negligent but has slowly started to want to be engaged and involved in both his wife and his kids’ (and step-kid’s) lives and activities. That’s pretty neat and I hope to see more of it. And speaking of things I hope to see more of, next week looks like it will be the return of Daphne the wood nymph. I knew her character design was too hot to leave as a bit character!
