English Dub Review: Dead Mount Death Play “The Invaders”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Polka’s magical rampage has drawn even more unwanted attention to his new home. As if thrill-seeking magicians and underworld hitmen weren’t bad enough, he now has a shrewd reporter to contend with.

Our Take:

It’s not Halloween without the return of everyone’s favorite necromancer. Three months after the first cour’s shocking conclusion, Dead Mount Death Play is back to continue the Corpse God’s dangerous quest to live a peaceful life in Shinjuku. Of course, what better time of the year to celebrate this occasion than around Halloween? You know, because of the skeletons and the other spooky stuff surrounding Polka and his crew. Despite some of its convoluted elements, I’ve been enjoying Dead Mount Death Play for its animation and solid take on the heavily-exposed isekai genre, or in this case, “reverse isekai”. So, it’s unsurprising that I was interested in the direction it’ll go for its second part.

Based on the first part’s conclusion, it’s no shock that things aren’t looking too bright for the necromancer. The last time we saw the Corpse God, his dark powers were exposed to the world while confronting Solitaire and Lemmings. Of course, that includes the mysterious group of people who were teased at the end of the previous episode. However, that’s the least of Polka’s problems right now. For starters, the group has to stay one step ahead of a young, cunning reporter named Kocho, who’s looking for a big scoop regarding the previous events. Based on what I’ve seen from her, she could wind up being the Lois Lane of Dead Mount Death Play, in which she seeks the truth behind Polka’s identity. She already figured out Takumi’s past, which was explained briefly in the episode, so what’s stopping her from doing the same with the Corpse God?

Additionally, “The Invaders” has another exposition-driven narrative exploring more of Polka’s past, including the Bastard Children of Sabaramond. It also showcases the new threats we’ll be up against in later episodes. One is a seemingly supernatural being named Mamaya, who’s seen ruthlessly killing several people, so here’s hoping that Polka has enough tricks up his sleeve to combat this guy. As usual, it can still be a bit tough to follow sometimes, especially without subtitles. However, the episode continues to show why I enjoyed the show’s first half, and I’m assuming I’ll also enjoy the remaining chapters coming our way.
