Review: Rick and Morty Presents #1: The Science of Summer

By John Schwarz

August 30, 2023

Overview

AN ALL-NEW, GIANT-SIZED TALE FROM THE EDGE OF THE RICK AND MORTY OMNIVERSE STARRING . . . OH NO, IT’S SUMMER!

Summer is sick of being sidelined. She has opinions, she deserves attention, and in the absence of a loving family, she knows exactly where to get it: online. When her future self—the hottest influencer and social media maven of an alien planet—pulls her into what should be her dream life, she realizes that with great power comes very little responsibility.

At last, it’s Morty’s sister’s time to shine in an all-new, 40-page journey to the edge of time and space from Eisner Award-nominated writer Magdalene Visaggio (Eternity Girl) and Rick and Morty mega-talent Marc Ellerby (Doctor Who)!

Our Take

Despite the fact that Oni Press is touting this release as a “At Last, Summer gets a special”, Summer has had several special issues of Rick and Morty comics as well as episodes of the show where she’s been allowed to go full-blown girl-boss. The disappointing thing for me is that the premise from Magdalene Visaggio of us getting a story kicked off by a social media app seems a bit too easy for me. Even adding a potential doppelganger from an altered universe is typical Rick and Morty, almost too typical.

Marc Ellerby is probably one of my favorite artists mainly because his illustrations are by far the closest to the show whence compared to the stable of artists that Lion Forge/Oni Press has at it’s disposal and this helps the score a bit. The dialogue doesn’t have a ton of punchlines, but it does pace well for the plot that ends on a note begging for a second issue. If it were to get one, I’d like to see a bit more originality in some of the beats.
