Blu-Ray Review: Babylon: The Road Home

By John Schwarz

August 22, 2023

If you haven’t yet, read our review of Babylon 5: The Road Home the film here.

In the new feature-length film, return to Babylon 5 as the epic interstellar saga continues with Babylon 5: The Road Home. Travel across the galaxy with John Sheridan as he unexpectedly finds himself transported through multiple timelines and alternate realities in a quest to find his way back home. Along the way he reunites with some familiar faces, while discovering cosmic new revelations about the history, purpose, and meaning of the Universe.

The home release features a slew of special features including commentary throughout the film with creator J. Michael Straczynski, along with returning original series actors Bruce Boxleitner, and producer Rick Morales. We also get an excellent featurette called Babylon 5 Forever.

In Babylon 5 Forever, creator J. Michael Straczynski, along with returning original series actors Bruce Boxleitner, Claudia Christian, Tracy Scoggins, Patricia Tallman and a host of others discuss bringing back the long-dormant franchise to life, and the unenviable decision of figuring out whether or not to carry on with the franchise with a few of the original cast members having been dearly departed over the course of the decade or so since the show had its finale.

Is the home release worth the near $50 price tag that Amazon is touting today that includes both the Blu-Ray AND the 4k HD copies? Unfortunately, no. If you’re die-hard enough about Babylon 5 you probably have made the decision already to do just that, but your casual fans should do just fine in just renting the film on Vudu or Prime Video for $5 or so and just hope that the killer special features show up on the MAX streaming service. I’m usually the first to vouch for getting home releases regardless so that nobody can alter what’s on the disc, no censorship or changes in PC culture affecting what you have, but $50 is deep for the casual fan base to really get enough value out of the home release.
