Review: Camp Camp “With Friends Like These”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)The kids at Camp Campbell have been through many thrilling adventures since we last saw them, but Max, Niel, and Nikki soon face a new problem: self-induced anxiety! After overhearing the other kids razzing them, the three start becoming concerned that no one actually likes them. After many awkward and needy conversations, they learn this was a misunderstanding, but also that camp is actually ending in just over a week. Not only that, Gwen has a big viral blow up at David through a Truth Social-like app that lands her a dream job she’s been looking for, meaning she’ll be moving on. Most begin plans to finish the summer with a bang, but David gives a despondent Max one last pep talk about enjoying things while they last, allowing everyone to leave Camp Campbell on good but bittersweet terms.OUR TAKEHuh, didn’t think I would be doing another Rooster Teeth thing so soon, but here we are. Since April, the company has been doing a months-long celebration of old shows by doing extra episodes…and making the worst logo change ever that is literally a ripoff of Australian fast food chain Red Rooster (I’m not kidding, look it up, it is way too noticeable to be a coincidence). Some of these new episodes were easy enough since plenty were Let’s Plays or live action segments, but to my surprise, they’re also bringing back some animated shows, specifically Red Vs Blue getting a final season this Fall with co-creator Burns coming out of retirement AND a new season of Camp Camp next year. Personally, I would say Camp Camp is probably the RT show that has stayed most consistent in quality once it found its footing, helped by the fact that it didn’t end up having the pressure of being the main cashcow for the entire company like RWBY did or have the legacy standards like RVB. But for whatever reason, it went dormant in late 2019 with no word on when it may return.I had always figured that, given this long hiatus, that any return to the show would be used as a soft reboot by simply jumping to the next summer as an opportunity to age up some characters, ditch those who had overstayed their welcome (*coughDOLPHcough*), and maybe try revitalizing the feel of the show that way. To my pleasant surprise, it seems like that still might be the direction they end up going, but they were nice enough to give us this bonus episode as a way of sending the original version of the show off in style. There’s some transparent moves made to explain the absence of characters they couldn’t or didn’t bother to work into this story, like the rival camps or Mr. Campbell, as well as directly calling out how Dolph’s main gag had long since served its purpose AND the expected house cleaning of replacing voices that no longer fit the ethnicity of the character they were playing with VERY good replacements. Seriously, I very much thought Max’s new voice was still Michael Jones at a few points, so they definitely got a good soundalike there. What we end up getting overall is an episode that feels like it was pulled out of a lost Season 5 of the show that we never got, but still ended up giving us the parts we needed to see and feeling like a natural progression of this story. It was genuinely nice to see how easily everyone snapped back into their old dynamics, as well as how easily the new talent fit snugly into these developed characters. I really hope this isn’t the last we see of Gwen because her new voice absolutely killed it here, and I most certainly hope we get to hear the new Max come back to camp in the next season, either as an older more experienced camper or even a seasoned counselor alongside David. In the end, this episode provided the closure a lot of people like me didn’t get from the premature pausing of the original series (and in ways that fans of stuff like Nomad of Nowhere or Gen:Lock are probably never going to get) while opening a pathway to new adventures that will hopefully be just as strong as the old. Meanwhile, the rest of the remaining animation team have to beg people to use a hashtag to possibly get more RWBY so…#greenlightvolume10?
