English Dub Review: Mashle: Magic and Muscles “Mash Burnedead and the Baleful Bully”

By Marcus Gibson

June 09, 2023

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Mash continues life at the magic academy with the help of Finn, with whom he shares the same dorm room. One day, Mash is called out by Lloyd, a continuing student similar to Finn, and is unwittingly made into an errand boy under the impression that it will help him become the Divine Visionary. As the situation gradually escalates, he coincidentally discovers Finn lying in front of Lloyd, bleeding…!

Our Take:

You can’t have a school life without that one annoying bully torturing those beneath them, including you. Unfortunately, that’s what Mash encounters next during his quest to become the Divine Visionary and live a normal life. This week’s episode sees the muscular yet dim-witted student going toe-to-toe with Lloyd, a self-centered and obnoxious student who constantly bullies other classmates. Lloyd’s father is part of the Bureau of Magic and is friends with Easton Academy’s vice-principal, Farman, giving him all the reasons to torture and even assault his targets without getting into trouble.

Sadly, that includes Mash, whose belongings are continuously vandalized by him and Mash’s roommate Finn. However, Mash doesn’t seem to mind this at all. Usually, what Mash did is the best option to not stoop to the bully’s level, serving as another example of Mash’s selfless personality underneath his denseness. Well, at least until Mash slammed Lloyd’s head into the floor after seeing him beating Finn to a pulp. To be fair, that asshole had it coming. So is Farman when he gets buried in a hole by Mash for expelling him. This would’ve been a short school life for Mash, but Headmaster Wahlberg says otherwise. Wahlberg supports Mash in pursuing his goal since he’s grown tired of the government and society being corrupted by people like Lloyd. Headmaster of the year, ladies and gentlemen!

The episode further expands on Mash’s friendship with Finn, with Mash showing his complete gratitude toward Finn despite not knowing that Finn’s responsible for destroying his books. Seeing how overly generous Mash is toward him, Finn feels guilty for doing Lloyd’s dirty work, resulting in him standing up to that egocentric bastard. Of course, even though Finn admitted to being a terrible friend to Mash, the dense and muscular man quickly forgave him. This leads to Mash delivering the biggest and funniest “F You” to Lloyd, which I would watch over and over again if I’m bored.

Thanks to this episode, I’m growing more fond of this series regarding its parodic humor and concept. While it still follows some familiar elements from other magic academy shows, Mashle continues to offer a unique and bizarrely amusing approach to keep the idea entertaining. The scenes involving Mash getting his broom to fly without magic were as hilarious as I expected. But, of course, it is also the potential result of Mash’s “fall from grace”, as he’s thrust into the Duelo team by Tom despite his lack of magic.
