English Dub Review: Farming Life in Another World “Waterways Make Life Feel Complete”

Overview (Spoilers Below): Now that they’ve secured a reliable water source, they can start a rice paddy and build a bathhouse.

Our Take: Hiraku’s farm continues to expand, with his crew following close behind. They’ve grown enough food to last them for weeks, even months. However, this week’s episode shows that food isn’t enough to keep them from smelling like cow manure left out in the sun for too long. So Hiraku and the others construct a canal and reservoir to gain water and fish from the river. Beforehand, they gained another monstrous ally from the Death Forest: the Queen Bee, which Zabuton captured. As a result, Hiraku builds another shed for the humongous bee to build a hive and produce honey. Along with the fish and rice paddy, Hiraku and the girls have a variety of food to choose from, but they still have hygiene issues to deal with. They then build a bathhouse with a second reservoir and a purification pool to purify the water with slimes from the baths. Since Hiraku doesn’t have the elven girls’ magic to clean himself, it would be suitable for him to have his own bath. But, of course, this comes with a disadvantage due to the number of women Hiraku has. While having a harem has its perks, sharing a single bath with naked ladies can be very awkward, especially when you’re in Hiraku’s shoes. The episode further showcases Hiraku’s kind and generous personality, who treats others fairly without taking advantage of them, especially Ru and the other girls. He even takes the time to show them how to cook onigiri and take a bath despite the embarrassment of the latter. In other words, the show continues to resemble itself as an educational farming program. It’s suitable for those who are into farming but also tedious for people who aren’t. To me, it’s somewhere in between. This continues toward the end of the episode, where Kuro the wolf narrates how he and his female companion first encounter Hiraku after being driven away from a Grappler Bear. Despite Hiraku’s lack of knowledge that they’re Infernal Wolves, Kuro is grateful that he gave him and his family a place to stay, seeing him as more than a weak human. That alone is enough to maintain my interest in its repetitive formula, which continues to see Hiraku gaining additional helpers for the farm, including more elven girls. Time to build more houses.
