Overview
Rick and Morty find themselves in the mad composer’s clutches and must weather Concerto’s orchestral onslaught while trying to figure out what any of this have to do with Rick. Can they survive this macabre musical death race, or will Concerto compose the Rick and Morty Requiem?
Our Take
I was really looking forward to a book featuring Concerto as the lead villain, but in this new one-shot written by David Brockton McKinney I couldn’t be more disappointed. Most of the beats seem heavily inspired by prior episodes of the TV series doing the exact same thing, obvious odes to episodes like “One Crew over the Crewcoo’s Morty”, “Never Ricking Morty”, and even some Vindicators III thrown in for good measure. Jarrett Williams and Leonardo Ito checked in with solid contributions from the art department, but the dialogue was so drab and rife with cliches, even by the comics’ standards, that I was bored beyond belief.
The one-shot had a LOT of opportunity to potentially build out Concerto a bit more, explain how the hell he survived an assassination at the hands of Jaguar, whatever, and a lot of that potential was lost here.
