Overview:
The second season of Don’t Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro
Our Take:
You might recall that I absolutely hated the first season of this anime. So much so in fact that I was really upset when it got announced that it was even getting a second season. There are so many anime out there that never get a second season that I was upset this series did. Now I would say my point still stands on that and I can think of so many more deserving anime but the second season of Nagatoro was leaps and bounds better… plot-wise at least.
Where it didn’t improve was the animation. I understand that some of the “poor” animations are just a design choice of the author. Perhaps what I’m about to complain about is the same way but it feels lazy regardless of who does it. What I’m talking about is the fact that no one but the plot’s important characters has a face. You just get to see some hair and some eyebrows, in fact, I think Senpai might be the only male character who gets a face.
From a story standpoint though this one got so much better. I have to tip my cap to them because of how much they improved. It was always defined as a romance but it leaned way more into the “bullying” aspect for me to actually enjoy it and you know I love some romance.
The first few episodes still dealt with the bullying stuff pretty heavily but it eventually found its footing as more of a rom-com. From that point on it was a lot more enjoyable and I would say almost better than a lot of other rom-coms out there. Senpai improved a lot from the first season and actually had the courage to ask Nagatoro out a couple of times. Nagatoro also started to become more honest with how she felt toward Senpai.
There was a new character introduced in the art club who was the former president’s cousin. She seems like a cool character but was introduced so late in the season that we don’t really get much time with her.
This leads me to my last and probably most surprising point. I hope there is a third season of Nagatoro. I know what you’re thinking but it got a lot better! It’s hard to recommend though because there is so much garbage anime to get through before you get to the good stuff in this one. But if Rent-a-Girlfriend can get a third season then surely this can too right?
