The fact that Guillermo Del Toro’s take on Pinnochio won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film on Disney’s ABC network and not that piece of shit live-action Disney+ adaptation of the classic animated film makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. That said, ShadowMachine has TWO stop-motion animated projects on the way post this big win to go along with all of the other work the affluent studio is working on.
Earlier this week, it was announced that ShadowMachine is re-teaming with Pinocchio director Mark Gustafson for an original stop-motion animated film called Milepost 88. The animated mystery series that doesn’t have a network home just yet is an original idea from Gustafson and according to Deadline who broke the story, the series follows two brothers, who run an old gas station deep in the Great Basin desert of Nevada, when their lives are upended by a passing stranger who unlocks a mystery involving their family history. The puzzle further unfolds in 1969 with the exploits of a reluctant cosmonaut as he tries to be the first man to reach the moon. As these parallel stories cross time and space, they reveal truths about love, ambition, and brake fluid.
Also on the way, Guillermo Del Toro is re-teaming with ShadowMachine on an animated adaptation of The Buried Giant that he will be directing. This film will be on Netflix and according to Deadline it follows follows an elderly Briton couple, Axl and Beatrice, living in a fictional post-Arthurian England in which no one is able to retain long-term memories.
