Overview (Spoilers Below):
All of Lone Moose gets wrapped up in the Little Mr. Ketchikan Canned Sausage Gentleman Pageant competition, a pageant for boys with an unusual history.
Our Take:
Lone Moose is gearing up for a pageant in this week’s episode of The Great North. However, this peculiar competition differs from those involving girls wearing dresses and looking pretty. Instead, it’s a boys’ pageant that has them wearing sausage costumes instead of dresses. I get that the Alaskan town is full of strange traditions, but I think this one takes the cake of being the most peculiar of them all.
The episode sees the people of Lone Moose hosting this year’s Little Mr. Ketchikan Canned Sausage Gentleman Pageant after being banned due to an incident involving Beef. Beef once competed as a bratwurst, but the controversy surrounding the brats from the blind sausage taste test resulted in him and the town being banned. This year finally sees the town hosting the event, with Ham and Moon hoping to compete together. However, the pressure of competing in this “high-stakes” competition changes those plans, and not for the better. Later on, we found out that Brian was framed for putting laxatives in Beef’s sausage by none other than Beef himself.
“Boy Meats World Adventure” is another episode involving the characters facing the pressures of going for the gold, resulting in them being driven apart by their obsession for winning. It’s another episodic tale as old as 1950s television showcasing what’s really important regarding the competition. For Ham and Moon, the true meaning of the pageant is that everyone is linked like sausage links. Unfortunately, not many people approve of this message when Ham and Moon wear the same costume as a means to make amends.
The Great North usually brings something interesting into its formulaic structures regarding its deadpan humor and heart. It’s a similar process that made Bob’s Burgers a hit, but with a new environment and different character dynamics to make it stand apart. For “Boy Meats World Adventure”, the show switches the ordinary girls’ pageant routine with a sausage-costumed boys pageant whose long title could function as a nifty tongue-twister. The episode also includes a decent twist involving Brian’s involvement in Beef and Lone Moose’s ban.
However, even with those elements, “Boy Meats World Adventure” is a formulaic and mostly forgettable episode that only benefited from its humor. The comedy is primarily due to Wolf practicing his roasts on people for his gig. He sucks at providing insult comedy, except for the Christopher Walken one for Honeybee. That was pretty funny. However, that’s part of this character’s sensitive and eager charm. This led to Wolf learning to make jokes that were both complimentary and insulting. Other than that, this lackluster competition may be another thing that’s giving me diarrhea, not just the laxative-infused sausage.
