Overview (Spoilers Below):

Anos and the Demon King Academy students arrive at the village to search for the path to Hearten. There, they encounter a mysterious girl named Lina. Then, with the help of Tifi and the fairies, the students arrive at the Spirit School Building, where they’re forced to take a written test to gain access to the Spirit King.

Our Take:

If there’s one thing I should mention about this week’s episode, it’s how Crunchyroll messed up with the episode description for episode three. They just copied and pasted the description from last week’s episode of The Misfit of Demon King Academy. What makes it even more annoying is that they didn’t even bother to correct that mistake before I started watching “The Spirit’s School Building”. I thought the upload delays for specific shows were enough to make my blood boil, but this particular error continues to showcase how irritatingly flawed the website’s system is.

But, of course, I can’t waste any more time complaining about Crunchyroll as much as I wanted to. Besides, we’re already halfway through the first part of the show’s second season. For this occasion, we see Anos and the gang taking a school field trip as they continue their quest to find the “Child of God”. Their journey takes them to a village, where they have to find Tifi and the fairies and make them laugh to reveal the path to Hearten and find Shin Reglia. To find them, the students have to wait until an eclipse arrives since the fairies hide in the fog. Fortunately, thanks to Anos’s magic, they don’t have to wait that long.

The episode also features a new member joining the Demon King party, Lina. Lina is a young woman with a blurred face who does not remember what happened to her. As the episode progresses, we gradually learn that Lina may be a spirit tasked with finding the Spirit King. Lina also mentions that she has encountered Anos before, leading to more questions about how that encounter happened and whether what she said is true.

The episode also has the students trapped inside the Spirit School Building alongside the four demons, including Gilysiris, Jistis, and Code. Their teacher (or captor) is the Great Spirit of Education, a giant tree with a CGI face who has them take a test to see if they’re worthy of visiting the Spirit King. If you’ve been following my reviews, you’ll know how I feel about CGI in anime shows. It’s usually sluggish compared to the swift 2D style and sometimes stiff in its movements, and the Great Spirit’s face is no exception.

Aside from its middling CGI work, “The Spirit’s School Building” is another serviceable continuation of Anos’s latest journey that offers some humorous moments between the characters. One of them is when the students try and fail hysterically to make the fairies laugh, with Zeshia doing impersonations and Misa’s club members making a “Club of Anos” pun. The latter made the fairies chuckle, which meant it must be funny. With the students passing the written test thanks to Anos’s sneaky magic, they’re set to undergo the Spirit’s Trial in next week’s episode. Hopefully, it’ll be an easy test for them to accomplish compared to studying for one.
