Mickey, Minnie, and their pals attempt to celebrate the perfect Christmas at their snowy cabin. However, when Pluto causes Santa to lose all the presents on his sleigh, the friends travel to the North Pole on a quest to save Christmas and find the true meaning of the holiday…In the spirit of the classic Rankin-Bass Holiday specials many of us have grown up watching and somehow still maintain the test of time, Disney dips their toes into making something equal in terms of a watchable holiday special as it steps into the almost dying animation style known as Stop Motion in which a handful of companies and animators still know how to deliver a polished product. If anything, it’s the extreme opposite of Stoopid Buddy’s mean-spirited “Woke” comedy Santa Inc. which came out last year. Directed by David H. Brooks, produced by Disney, and animated by Stoopid Buddy Stoodios of Robot Chicken fame with an extensive track record under their belt as it takes almost infinite patience for the animators to meticulously handle it. With such fluidity and attention to detail in what Brooks has gone on record to say “the longest stop-motion Mickey Mouse production to date” and the final product shows, complete with Disney voice veterans such as Bret Iwan as Mickey Mouse, Kaitlyn Robrock as Minnie Mouse, Disney Legend Bill Farmer as Goofy (and Pluto), and Disney Legend Tony Anselmo as Donald Duck. The music and original songs are equally whimsical from the songwriters Laura Schein and Ben Zeadman of “Honor Society” fame. And not counting Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas or any of Henry Selick’s past works with Disney, this, of course, isn’t the first time a Disney holiday special involving Mickey and his pals was shot in stop-motion, as it’s the second time by Robot Chicken’s animation team were also involved with a previous stop-motion animated short, called “Mickey Mouse and the Magical Snowy Holiday,” for Disney Junior back in 2020.Much of the humor that’s often par for the course for Disney’s beloved characters relies heavily on situational/physical comedy mixed with its slushy sentimentality that manages to mesh well in terms of holiday wholesomeness with plenty of setups and payoffs that feel earned even if they’re a bit cliche and corny at times, but you kinda know what you’re getting yourself into with the predictable story-setup of “Santa needs insert-character-here’s” help to save the holidays complete with a colorful and well-done end credits sequence. Overall, this was a fun and passable holiday special worth sharing with your family and it’s perfectly safe for your kids to watch even if it felt predictable at times. Nearly every cartoon or animated film from The Flintstones to the Ruby/Spears Pac-Man cartoon, to even Ernest (RIP Jim Varney) has done their spin on this particular “Santa Team-up” formula, yet it still somehow works because next to the hundreds of different Christmas Carol retellings/interpretations that continue to exist, as long as it captures the hopeful holiday spirit that people are nostalgic for, it’s going to have it’s own audience and thanks to streaming services such as Disney+ and Hulu, this special won’t likely be forgotten.
