Insight: Paramount+ Won Summer 2022’s Adult Animation Battle

If you’re a fan of adult animation, what’s THE streaming service to have right now? Netflix’s catalog is growing, but with the recent departure of Mike Moon, I’m thinking summer took a back seat this go-round (fall looks a lot better). Hulu typically does one series a quarter, while typically those series are great, it’s still just the one. HBO MAX, let’s not talk about THEM right now. But, if you are truly a fan of adult animation, the must have streamer to have had for Summer 2022, is by far Paramount+.

It started a year ago, Paramount Entertainment renewed their deal with Matt Stone and Trey Parker, creators of South Park for not just more seasons of the show on Comedy Central, but a number of feature films as well. Arguably, 2022 saw more South Park in one year than at any other time with six episodes and two feature films. If you’re like me and count episodes of TV like Adult Swim, anytime you double the allotted time of a single episode, you have yourself a double. So, take six episodes, two movies with allotted run-times of an hour each, add in six episodes of TV, you got yourself 12 episodes of South Park in 2022 so far, and the year isn’t even over yet. Matt Stone and Trey Parker also did a big ass celebration of 25 years of South Park that featured the likes of Ween, Primus, and a surprise appearance by Rush!

That’s not all, Paramount+ saw the return of the almighty Mike Judge and his venerable Beavis and Butt-Head franchise. After kicking things off with a feature-length film, Beavis and Butt-Head the streamer premiered the ninth season of the legendary series which, so far, is so good. Add in the fact that an Emmy campaign for Tooning Out The News is underway and a new season of Star Trek: Lower Decks kicks off on August 24th. The streamer also features classic episodes of Comedy Central favorite adult animation like Drawn Together, Daria, Crank Yankers(which also got ten new episodes this year after airing on Comedy Central), and starting in 2025, the entire South Park library. What’s not to love?

Paramount+ appears to be looking into the future of it’s adult animation and seemingly wants more. The streamer just ordered a new series with Chris Rock, inked Mike McMahan and Sanjah Shah to overall deals, and a number of other adult animation movies and series on the slate. Recall that JustWatch had Paramount+ ranked #7 in the streamers with the most subscribers, with Netflix recently announcing a couple hundred thousand canceling their subs, Paramount+ might be best suited to grab those fans pining for adult animation.
