Overview (Spoilers Below):
Baby receives a teddy bear from Gargamel, but that toy has a camera in its eye, allowing Gargamel to spy on them with the help of his crystal ball. When the Smurfs find that out, they make up a fake story to trap the evil wizard.
Our Take:
The lovable Smurfs have returned after another brief hiatus with their latest two-part episode. This new half-hour adventure sees the blue creatures starring in their own show, with their number one fan being none other than their enemy, Gargamel. The reason behind it is that the evil wizard gave Baby a toy with a hidden camera inside to spy on the Smurfs and know their locations. So the Smurfs create a fake show to lure him into their trap to combat his nefarious plot.
Much of the humor in this two-part episode centers on several references to modern everyday living, mainly Gargamel getting attached to binge-watching. There’s also a nice nod to the wizard’s crystal ball resembling Alexa. Additionally, the comedy features the Smurfs creating a fake show that’s out of a Games of Thrones episode, where Smurfette, Hefty, and the others plan to “overthrow” Papa Smurf, much of Gargamel’s excitement. They then attempt to lure Gargamel into a trap by revealing the location to the magical sword, but their plan backfired thanks to Dimwitty. Despite that, they managed to escape from Gargamel’s grasp, with him and his mother getting trapped in the cage like mice.
The previous half-hour specials of The Smurfs have been enjoyable so far, even though they’re just single episodes that are unnecessarily expanded to thirty minutes. “The Smurfs Show” is unsurprisingly no different, with a story that could’ve been easily solved in just one episode. However, like the last couple of two-part episodes, “The Smurfs Show” offers enough charming moments in its slapstick to provide some enjoyment in its lengthy narrative. Plus, the addition of Gargamel’s mother makes it more watchable than it should have been. Aside from that, I don’t see the Smurfs going into show business anytime soon.
