Review: Aquadonk Side Pieces “The Return of Handbanana”; “The Broodwrap”

Overview:

“The Return of Handbanana”

Carl is once again mixed up in an abusive relationship as Handbanana returns to make his life miserable. While Frylock attempts to understand Carl’s pleas for help, Meatwad is just in time with some fresh horchata (Mexican hot chocolate). With the chocolate poisoning the dog creature, Carl takes his chance to try and escape.

“The Broodwrap”

The immortal Broodwhich makes its return with some rebranding. With Carl taking on a new gig as a delivery driver, the Broodwrap explains every dastardly ingredient that he is made of. Thankfully, once delivered, Master Shake never intended on eating the evil wrap and instead used the opportunity to make his neighbour’s new job a living hell.

Our Take:

Few could have ever predicted that we would still be watching Aqua Teen Hunger Force 22 years later, after the series first premiered at the end of December 2000. Yet here we are. As we await the highly anticipated Aqua Teen Hunger Force sequel film, the creators have decided to bring our favourite fast-food characters back to life.

The whole squad is back together for a new series of animated shorts titled Aquadonk Side Pieces. Premiering on the Adult Swim YouTube channel, ten mini-episodes will be premiering consecutively every day. The revival intends to focus on some of the show’s greatest villains, including all of your favourite regulars.

The Aqua Teen shorts premiered on April 18th with “The Return of Handbanana”. The memorable villain from the fourth season of the series is a solid choice for a comeback reintroducing Carl’s unhealthy relationship with dogs. The poorly illustrated dog is still trouble for Carl, and this time he has added a shock collar to keep his prey close to home. And despite the help of Frylock and Meatwad, Carl might be stuck for good.

Aquadonk followed things up with “The Broodwrap”, a fresh rebrand of the formidable Broodwhich. Now without sundried tomatoes to thwart his plans, the Broodwrap is hoping somebody will eat his unholy form completely this time. However, the vegan meal that is not-so vegan does not sound so appetizing as the Broodwrap spends most of the short explaining what he is made of.

Both new shorts prove that Aqua Teen Hunger Force is as funny and relevant as always. The animated sitcom has been out of production for seven years, and still, fans are clamouring back to watch these glimpses of their old friends. After surviving an impressive eleven seasons and still maintaining their fanbase all these years later, it is hard to see Aqua Teen Hunger Force ever dying off. And hopefully, this new collection of shorts means that there is fresh news of the animated movie being released sooner rather than later. We have waited long enough.
