Six Adult Animated Series That Pay Homage To Classic Cartoons

The Venture Bros Doubles Down on Jonny Quest

The Venture Bros is the king of parodying cartoons from the past. And that’s saying a lot considering Adult Swim made its bones spoofing the entire Hanna-Barbera library. From Space Ghost Coast to Coast to Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law, Adult Swim used Cartoon Network’s stock of classic toons as their personal, depraved playground.

The funniest thing about that was no matter how much CN lampooned the characters they owned, they forbade The Venture Brothers from poking fun of Jonny Quest. That’s right, the same network that portrayed Fred Flintstone as a mob boss and Secret Squirrel as a flasher, declared Jonny Quest was off limits.

So, setting aside the Fair Use Doctrine, this show which is largely based on The Adventures of Jonny Quest, created the character of “Action Johnny.” For all intents and purposes, he is a middle-aged, strung-out version of the boy sleuth.
