Which upcoming shows are you most excited about?
2017 has been a big year for adult animation with new shows like Big Mouth, Jeff and Some Aliens, and The Jellies. But, 2018 is shaping up to be even more significant. The popularity of superhero movies continues to leak over into mature cartoons. Matt Groening is preparing to launch his next animated show on Netflix. And, a slew of new shows and films are planned for the new year. Without having to list them all, we thought it would be fun to share our list of what we are most excited about:
Corner Gas
The award-winning Canadian television series, Corner Gas, is being re-launched as an animated series. The show will feature most of the original cast reprising their roles and follows the mundane humour of an isolated gas station in Dog River, Saskatchewan. Corner Gas is one of Canada’s most famous media titles, being aired in 26 countries; re-launching under animated production opens the door for the franchise to continue its prominence for years to come.
Super Slackers
420 TV is getting ready to launch in January in a big way. The network has invested in long-time Simpsons director and animator, David Silverman to create this new animated series. Super Slackers features a team of young super-powered stoners, who most often cannot be bothered to get off the couch save the world. The fresh series is all set up for plenty of bong and weed jokes.
The Happytime Murders
For a generation that grew up on Jim Henson landmarks like Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, and The Muppet Show, there are plenty of reasons to be excited about this feature film, The Happytime Murders. Based on the idea of humans and puppets living together, the movie will take a look at celebrity puppets with dark secrets. Melissa McCarthy will star alongside long-time muppeteer, Bill Barretta.
GenLock
So, wait. The people who produce RwBy are producing a mech-series? We, the people of Earth, may not even be close to prepared as to what that could mean.
Final Space
Created and developed by celebrity YouTuber, Olan Rogers, Final Space is a science fiction series set to premiere on TBS. Rogers has already made a name for himself as a witty, and thought-provoking filmmaker. The show will follow astronaut, Gary Space, alongside his alien pal, Mooncake, as they try to find the end of the universe, or ‘Final Space’.
Gotham by Gaslight
Batman vs Jack the Ripper in a steampunk styled Gotham City, what is there not to be excited about? Set to be released on Blu-ray in February, Gotham by Gaslight will be the first DC film set in the Elseworlds (divergent of cannon DC comics timeline). Many other popular Batman characters will also make an appearance in this 1800’s reimagining.
Close Enough
Bubbleblabber writer, Green Lynx, said it best “is it Regular Show? Meh, Close Enough.” Developed by much of the same team that brought us Regular Show, including creator, J.G. Quintel, Close Enough will premiere on TBS. The series showcases the problematic adult transition from 20’s to 30’s; the show promises to touch on real-world troubles like parenthood and stripper clowns.
Hot Streets
Rick and Morty writer, Brian Wysol, is teaming up with Seth Green and Stoopid Buddy Stoodios for this Adult Swim original series. A pilot was released in 2016 alongside three other prospective shows, with Hot Streets being the most popular as voted by viewers. The show will follow FBI agents, and a girl with her talking dog, as they investigate the paranormal.
Disenchantment
Matt Groening has given us the modern animated family, The Simpsons; he followed that up with a glimpse into Sci-Fi with Futurama, now he delves us into medieval fantasy with Disenchantment. Netflix has already signed on for two, ten-episode seasons, with the first to be released next year. Groening has not let us down yet; it is hard to guess that Disenchantment will be anything but excellent.
Deadpool
Marvel, one of the biggest names in entertainment right now, is working with FX and Donald Glover in the creation of this new Deadpool animated series. The merc with a mouth has been one of Marvel Comics most popular characters since his inception in ’91. The dark, fourth-wall breaking humour of Deadpool has already seen a successful transition from page to screen with the hit 2016 feature film. With celebrated actor/writer Donald Glover at the helm of this project, we keep getting more excited.
