Exclusive Interview with “Brickleberry” Creators Waco O’ Guin and Roger Black about Upcoming Comic Book Series

By Mark FroHungry

July 05, 2016

On July 13, 2016, the producers of Brickleberry fight back with a comic book adaptation of the hit Comedy Central series which was unceremoniously cancelled a year or so ago. We caught up with Roger Black and Waco O’Guin so as to gauge what to expect in the print return featuring the worst park rangers ever.

Waco O’Guin and Roger Black- two dudes from Georgia with sick senses of humor, that taught my adolescent self the meaning of  no-holds barred comedy (MTV2’s Stankervision, anyone?), recently gave us the time of day for a discussion on all the most pondered questions pertaining to their Brickleberry comic series being released in about a week from the posting of this article. This duo never ceases to turn my frown upside down, and you all are just in luck! We at Bubbleblabber took the initiative, and have decided to bless you with answers that you never even knew that you needed to know. Without any further ado, brace yourself for knowledge of what is to come from our favorite park rangers and the future of the series as we know it.

BB: For the potential readers who don’t know the plot, can you give a synopsis?

Waco: So basically, we wanted to carry the story on where we left it. From the finale, it’s like 30 years in the future and there is only a handful of humans alive. All of the rangers are dead except for Steve; Dr. Kuz and Jorge made it, and Bobby Possumcods is still around. Dr. Kuz, Jorge, and Steve are in this bunker- this underground base- they are hiding out from these cows, it’s how they were able to survive all these years. And Bobby, has been captured by the cows and he has been their sex slave for the past 30 years and he’s loving it. He’s having a good time.

Roger: Steve’s got to go back in the time to stop Woody to prevent the alien cow invasion, in the first place. What happened in the last episode: Woody made his carbon footprint so big, and he had the farting cows and everything, and it allowed the emissions to get so high that the aliens cows could come down and flourish.

Waco: The whole thing was Woody’s fault. The cows have this leader called the “Bovine Overlord” who is like the bad guy. He finds out that Steve is going back to stop them but he wants everything to stay the way it is because Bobby is in heaven, so he volunteers to go back to stop Steve.

Roger: It’s like a retarded Terminator.

BB: What made you guys decide to shift to a comic book format?

WO: [Laughter] We got cancelled.

RB: Yeah, this was originally going to be season 4.

WO: Yeah, this is what we originally pitched to be the finale. This time travel story was supposed to be the finale but Comedy Central didn’t like the time travel. We started mapping it out before we got cancelled. Season 4 episode 1 was supposed to be this story.

BB: Do fan-favorite characters return to make appearances [in the comic]?

WO: Oh yes. We try to get every character that we possibly can into the story. People were afraid that some of the rangers weren’t going to be in it, but they obviously will, because it’s a time travel story.

BB: Awesome! I think that that’s going to please a lot of fans.

WO: Yeah, we got even Flamey the Bear in it. I think Mayor Ford is there too.

BB: Is Malloy as rude and bashful as ever?

WO: Oh yeah. Malloy is Malloy. He’s doing his thing. He’s a little bastard, ya know? And he’s switching sides. His whole thing is that he doesn’t think he’s going to die. He’s just out for himself, obviously, as always. He plays a big part.

BB: Cool, I know a lot of people love the show for Malloy.

WO: Malloy’s big thing is that he doesn’t think that he’s going to die. Steve tells everyone that they are doomed but Mallot thinks that is only the humans. He has a big change of heart when he realizes that he is going to die too. That definitely changes his motivation in the comic book.

BB: Without giving away any major spoilers, what is the most insane image in the first image?

RB: Connie’s bush. Two words.

WO: You get to figure out what Steve is packing, as well- you actually get to see it. Full frontal.

BB: That’s worth the first issue right there!

BB: Roger and Waco, would you each give an explanation for why fans and newcomers should buy/read the comics?

WO: I think any Brickleberry fan will love it. It’s just as funny and outrageous as any episode that we’ve ever done? We wrote it. We did not dial it in. We put just as much effort into it as any script we ever wrote for television. We oversaw the whole thing- down to repainting the comic ourselves, redrawing lines that weren’t drawn perfect. We were in every panel of this comic. Anybody who likes the show, is going to love this comic book.

RB: It’s fan-service. Even if you’ve never watched the show, if you’re a fan of comics- there’s humor, there’s a lot of action and a really strong story. If you’re a fan of comics, you’re going to like this.

BB: Finally, I have to ask it guys: What can be done for more Brickleberry episodes and/or a movie, and how can the fans help?

WO: I think the number one thing that everyone can do, is buy this comic book, because we can sit and tell the executives “Look, we got all these Facebook fans, and people are talking about it on Twitter.” They don’t care. What they do care about is sales. If this Brickleberry comic sells, it will do a lot, because if they see that we have a dedicated fan base that is willing to spend some money, it would really help. And it wouldn’t take that much to make this the #1 selling Dynamite comic book of all time. If 20% of the people on our Facebook page buy this comic book, probably less, then it would be the top selling [Dynamite] comic of all time and that’s big news; that’s a story. With our fan-base, it wouldn’t take much. We know that not everybody likes comics, hell I don’t like comic books that much, but this isn’t a normal comic book- it’s a Brickleberry comic book. It’s not just some kiddie shit. It’s a good comic. So spend $4 and we are going to do everything we can to revive the show.

BB: $4 is not that much money. That’s like 2 packs of gum. I make more money than that just taking a dump at work!

WO: [Laughter] Keep that in there! Yeah, use your dump money to buy the comic. We should mention that we are doing a signing at the Golden Apple in Los Angeles….

RB: July 13 at 6-8 pm.
