Review: Be Cool, Scooby-Doo! “Mystery 101”

Spoilers Below

Velma wants to get into Kingston University, but the school’s Dean Longfellow has a ghost problem and he needs the Scooby-Doo crew’s help in getting rid of said ghost that is terrorizing the school’s campus. The ghost-hunting crew gets down to business and does a thorough search of the school all the while escaping near-misses with the ghost. They find a bunch of clues, and figure that they need to get to the school’s tower to help close this case.

The ghost chase continues up to the roof, and Daphne has to say goodbye to a friend. Fortunately, the ghost is captured and it is revealed that the local gas station clerk and his dad that works at the school are the culprit ghosts, but they’ve also been declining potential school students. They get booked, and Velma decides she’s learned enough.

Our Take

Zac Moncrief takes on a franchise that has seen its fair share of cooks in the kitchen, and turns it on its nose. By far and away he produced the funniest adaptation of Scooby-Doo that I’ve seen in 30 years with jokes and punch lines that definitely serve his MacFarlane-roots just fine. Moreover, the twist at the end was shocking and had be fooled right until the end. I haven’t been sold on Scooby-Doo in a real long time, but that may be changing now.
