GAMES REVIEW – Uncle Grandpa: Up to Snow Good Review

It’s attack of the killer snowmen once again in cartoon land. Killer Snowmen during Christmas have been in all sorts of toons like Johnny Test, Cardcaptor Sakura, Kim Possible, Xiaolin Showdown, Courage the Cowardly Dog and many others. Now Uncle Grandpa can join their ranks in Up to Snow Good. The contextual story is that while helping out his kid of the week to make his snowmen come to life he accidentally makes them all evil. Now with the kid and his friends frozen solid, Uncle Grandpa armed with snowballs must battle the hordes of snowfreaks to save his friends.

We got ourselves another impossible Horde game, much like Regular Show’s Nigtmare-athon, where you move Uncle Grandpa up and down with the arrow keys and throw snowballs by clicking the space button (holding the space button to reward more points). Take out as many snowmen as you can while avoiding hitting your friends and allowing the snowmen to get to you. Also a funny thing I found, even if it’s the end of the wave and you accidentally threw one snowball too many TOO BAD you just lost. Thankfully the flow from game over to replay is practically instantaneous so there’s no problem there.

When it comes to controls Up to Snow Good is great. The controls are intuitive and flow well with the fast pace of the game play. The game is also a very meaty challenge for kids and older audiences. While playing I really had a tough time getting past the fifth wave due to it’s alarming spike in difficulty. Not sure if this is a 100% positive thing because at that point you still want to draw kids in with a slow difficulty curve before ramping up the challenge to entice kids to play for even longer. There’s nothing inherently wrong with a steep difficulty curve however and I can respect the game providing kids with a more tough game.

Overall it is a fun game, however I really can’t give it a really high score like Nightmare-a-thon. Up to Snow Good is a pretty addicting game with great controls and all that. But with its steep difficulty curve and the GOD AWFUL 5 second looping music it just waters down my enthusiasm to the point where I can recommend it to others but then turn around to go back to play Nightmare-a-thon instead. A fun game for Uncle Grandpa fans but you’ll get tired of it quickly.
