Mako starts to dig after the attack on the Southern Water Tribe in Republic City. And how is Bolin doing after starring in the propaganda movies? Jump in to find out!
Man, oh man, was this a long time coming. After a season of Saturday morning, and a very awkward 7pm time slot, Korra finally lands in my lap. How does it stack up?
Spoilers!
The episode starts off with one of Varrick’s ships getting destroyed by Northern troops, with a bunch of workers in a raft. Meanwhile, Eska and Desna wait for their father, who was taking a bath in the spirit portal. They bring news of Korra’s death. Back in Republic City, Bolin is starring in his first war-time propaganda film against Unalaq’s occupation of the Southern Tribe. This was one of the campiest, funniest things I’ve seen in this series.
Elsewhere, Asami finds out that her entire shipment of tanks got taken in the capture of the boat. The investigation is going nowhere, so Mako decides to take it upon himself to question the boat captain, but he is getting stonewalled, by the captain, and the other detectives. After a rather touching talk to Asami, Mako decides to take these leads himself.
Varrick gets them a boat, and Mako tries to get Bolin to help. Bolin has gone full movie star diva, and refuses. So, he resorts to getting the Triple Threats (think triad) t0 help. So, the manned boat is ready to go, and out to sea. More banter between Ginger and Bolin, with Bolin being really dumb. Back on the ship, Mako overhears the Triple Threats are going to double cross Mako and Asami. They make an escape via powerboats. They get back to the warehouse after a fantastic fight scene, and see that all of the tanks and robots are gone.
Asami is wiped out with this latest theft, but Mako refuses to give up. And the “Oh crap!” moment comes when Asami kisses Mako. The next day, Mako questions one of the Triple Threat, but to no avail. During one of the scenes Bolin was fighting, Mako realizes that the pyro was being set off by a remote trigger, and it was a Varrick exclusive. He gets to Asami’s office just in time to see her sign controlling interest of Future Industries to Varrick. And when I thought we were going to get an entire episode without Korra, she shows up within the last two minutes, and with amnesia. As Shamalyan would say, “What a twist!”
I loved this episode, until about two minutes left, when Korra came in. I think after the gun-ho, rush before acting Avatar we’ve gotten for the last 5 weeks, I was expecting an episode of no Korra. And I almost got it, except with a BS “amnesia” story. Come on, guys, that’s lazy.
However, as for the rest of the episode, I LOVED it. Bolin’s scenes were comedic gold, and easily stole the episode. I knew something fishy was going on with Varrick, because his schtick was over the top, by cartoon standards, but I wasn’t expecting all of that. That was, very not lazy. Thank you, writing crew. Mako had the majority of this episode to himself, and it felt like an episode of COPS was being filmed in Republic City. I mentioned the fight scene earlier, but you need to watch it. Picture the scene in one of the Daniel Craig Bond movies, but with fire and water bending. Worth the watch, definitely.
