Soundtrack Review: Dick Figures The Movie

“Sorry for the spoiler but it’s your fault. That’ll teach you to listen to the soundtrack before you watch the movie (I mean, for God’s sake, who does that you stupid piece of…)” This is an actual line from the Dick Figures The Movie The Song.

The answer, Mr. Keller and Mr. Skudder, is me. I’m that stupid piece of…

Ya see kids, John Blabber and I decided to split up the Dick Figures release. He took the movie review and I took the soundtrack. So I guess you could say that I technically went into this project blind, which is perfectly acceptable because you don’t need your eyes to hear.  I hit up iTunes, purchased the soundtrack with some left over gift card money from Christmas (Thanks mom!), and began the iPod loading process. This all went down as I made my morning cup of coffee. Once said coffee was freshly brewed and sufficiently sugared, I decided to hit this soundtrack Hollywood style. I just purchased a new car and decided that the musical styling’s on Nick Keller would be exactly what I needed to give my Chevy Sonic’s sound system the proper workout it required. I took full advantage of the amazing fuel economy I get from the new whip and just aimlessly drove and listened. Probably around “Harbor Dash” (Track 9) I realized I might not be encountering many words during this musical adventure. I tend not to be one for instrumentals unless they’re classical or sick guitar solos, but this album was catchy! The beats have an extremely diversified feel to them. Most of the songs have a little too much of a techno flair for my normal taste, but as I picture what the movie looks like via my mind’s eye, the songs totally fit. The good news is that none of the songs transcend from techno to dubstep. We should all be thankful that there is no dubstep.

Some songs, like the aforementioned “Harbor Dash” and “Le Tour Eiffel” have an epic aura to them that is only found in the music of grand video games like Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts. And then there’s “Dick Figures The Movie The Song,” which reminds me of the entire soundtrack of Rob Zombie’s animated classic “The Haunted World Of El Superbeasto,” which was masterfully performed by Hard And Phirm. The ability to recap an entire movie while keeping the humor fresh is a tough feat to accomplish, but the Dick Figures cast does an exceptional job.

Ultimately, this soundtrack probably sounds better with the moving pictures over top of it. It’s not that I don’t like the soundtrack, far from it, but I do wish I could have seen the flick as well before writing this review to get a full view of the context that the songs are displayed. A lot is to be said about the emotions of songs when paired properly with moving pictures. I can feel the songs as they try to speak to me, I just hope that we’re speaking the same language. All in all a solid collection of songs that I will drive really fast to! I suggest you go and pick it up today. C’mon, have I ever lead you astray before? Don’t answer that…
