Shorts Review: RWBY Chibi Episode 12

This episode was 6 mins and 02 seconds long with only two sketches much like episode 9 but less entertaining.

“Littering”

Jaune is walking by the street and encounters Sun Wukong with Neptune Vasilias sneaking up behind him. At first, Jaune is wowed that he’s actually interacting with him until Neptune sneaks behind Jaune spilling his drink.

When Jaune turns his head away for a brief second, Sun puts on a fake mustache which by “Roger Smith’s Disguise Logic” dictates that he’s a completely different person, In this case a policeman who is charging him for littering.

Neptune shows up with also a fake mustache and he gets out his library card in which Neptune proceeds to tackle him saying “We’re going into lock-down!”

Sun notices Neptune’s fake mustache falling off and he ends up joining in bullying Jaune.

People at the RTX event pointed out that there’s was an original scene edited to where Sun goes “He’s reaching!” and in this version he goes “Woah, look out!”

While it was refreshing to see Sun & Neptune in Chibi form but their introduction to this I felt was poorly executed.

This entire skit was just cringe-worthy…

“Little Red Riding Hood”

Team RWBY perform a stage play of “Little Red Riding Hood” with what sounds like Ozpin narrating.

Ruby jumps in saying the most cringe-worthy line I’ve ever heard a white person say: “What is good in the hood”? *SMH*

As the story progresses, Yang jumps in wearing fake gag-glasses and starts cracking jokes before walking back off the stage and the Play resumes.

The “Big Bad Wolf” of the play is revealed to be Blake who asks as a valid question “Why am I the wolf?” and Ruby Explains that she’s part animal and plus her dog Zwei is the “Stage-Hand” saying to Blake “You can’t be mad at that face.”

Only for Zwei to drop the rope making Blake fall face-down into the stage floor with her saying “I can be mad at that face”.

The narrator reveals that “Little Red” is packing heat and she unleashes her mechanical scythe and Blake looks on with concern because this is technically a live weapon pointed at her face and runs away.

Zwei makes a scene transition and Yang in this play is revealed to be the “Grandma” who is approaching this in an overly cheerful tone.

Ruby jumps in telling Yang to “Stop upstaging everyone and get to the bed” and as Blake agree’s with Ruby, Yang makes a cringe-worthy sex-pun: “Easy there Wolfie, You haven’t even bought me dinner yet.”

In an attempt to stay in character, Blake says “I’m just gonna move this along and eat her” and lightly bites her hand.

Given this is mean’t to be a disjointed and comedic take on “Red Riding Hood”, What I found to be possibly the funniest moment is this exchange between Ruby and Blake with Blake responding to every line out of character in a deadpan Daria-like tone and having zero fucks to give. 😛

And just as Blake jumps in, she gets abruptly interrupted by Yang making a terrible joke and Ruby points out how she’s fucking everything up.

Weiss enters as the “Woodsman” of the story and as she enters she asks why she was chosen for the part and criticizes the design of Professor Port’s Axe/Muskett weapon with Port’s voice out of nowhere saying “Ho-Ho, personal preference!” (That was random.)

Blake points out the logic of why Red Riding Hood would have a Sidekick if she has a powerful self-sufficient weapon and Ruby puts her foot down in frustration.

When Ruby explains that she wrote the story they begin to go “meta-commentary” on her saying that Red Riding Hood is a “Mary-Sue character” with Ruby countering by saying “I like to think that art is open to interpretation.”

Ozpin then says “Aren’t you kids supposed to be in class?”

Everyone bolts off the stage and Zweii shows up to give a bow to the audience and the sketch ends.

Wait, Why was the teacher narrating the fucking play to begin with? Did he have too much time on his hands to lend his voice for a Ruby’s play only to criticize his own students afterwards?

4/10

While Episode 9 excelled in having two fun sketches devoted to an episode, these two in episode 12 were a cringe-worthy mess with jokes that I felt only appeased the rabid “Bumblebee” shippers at Tumblr.

I can’t be the only one to also notice this but according to the RT community, they even got the voice actor’s name wrong for Ryan as his last name is Haywood.

With the exception of the Zwei moments and Ruby’s exchange with Blake, both of these I felt were poorly handled and if anything only makes Sun & Neptune look bad by giving them sort of a “Frat-boy/Dude-Bro” mentality.
