Review: SuperMansion “War on Christmas”

Was the battle any good?

Spoilers Below

When it comes to Christmas, all of the heroes have their own takes on the traditions. But when Cooch unleashes  Mr. Skibumpers and his cohort Santa Claus, Rex is horrified. At first, this Santa is pretty cool because all he does is just go around and drop off presents while Skibumpers sings songs.

Well, it doesn’t take long, but we get what Rex was saying as Santa goes nuts and starts to terrorize the downtown area of Storm City. Fortunately, Cooch is able to capture Santa and transform him back to the Jolly Old St. Nick we all know good and well. Rex gets his wish to capture Skibumpers and Santa chills. The heroes eat their meal and Skibumpers leaves us with a threat. Oh yeah, and why not a sneak peek of Resident Evil 7?

Our Take

For those looking for a way to get into SuperMansion and really just get a taste of a little bit of everything in which this show is about, this special is a good place to start. However, that may not be a good thing.

Accordingly, “War on Christmas” gives us a taste of the stellar action that this franchise provides, as well as the crazy characters laden with one-liners that spit out at you like a mini-gun, but with only 12 minutes to spare, we were given dollops of what the more drawn out series gives us. Jim Parsons as Mr. Skibumpers was excellent but is really a glorified cameo. If anything, more praise should fall on Gary Anthony Williams’ take on Santa as he’s a way more integral part of the episode than Parsons.

I think the build-up to Santa going nuts was a bit too long and I could’ve done completely without American Rangers’ bit about Christmas and ditto with Black Saturn’s. I would’ve preferred more time given to the fight with Santa to really showcase the franchise’s strengths in stop-motion choreography and maybe a bit more of a showdown with Skibumpers would’ve been appreciated as well.

The correct way to have presented this episode would’ve been something like a 30-minute special so as to give ourselves more time to get back in the grove of the large list of characters, then give us some juicier fight scenes.
