Review: Star Wars Rebels “Call to Action”

You know shit is about to go down when a Star Destroyer has an Imperial people mover going to Lothal.

Star Wars Call to Action

Spoilers!

So, Before we begin, let me tell you. I don’t have a time machine. DisneyXD’s app has this up, so, why not review it?

“Call to Action” was somewhat of an antithesis of what “Vision of Hope” was. In fact, if I didn’t know any better, I would say these were written by two completely different writing staffs. There was no hiding motives in a poorly written character, nor was there a bad excuse to go on a rescue mission that they really don’t need to go on. Everything for “Call to Action” was straight forward, and gift wrapped for easy consumption. “Call to Action” is the type of episode that I would expect to see from a show baring the Star Wars brand.

This was a direct continuation of “Vision of Hope,” to the point where Trayvis publicly joins the Empire, and blows the cover of the crew at the very beginning of the episode. As of that wasn’t enough, “Call to Action” saw the guest spot of Grand Moff Tarkin give the episode a very serious turn. Bringing in all of these characters for various cameos really does add to the authenticity of the series, and backs up Disney’s claim that Rebels is canon. Oh, and lest I forget the plot twist that went down at the end of the episode. But we’ll get to that in a minute.

I’m pretty convinced that this was one of the best written episodes, because it focused on the mission at hand, and didn’t have a superfluous plot. Everything led up to the attack on the communications tower, and a face-off with Agent Kallus, the Inquisitor, and subsequently, Toffin himself. In fact, that was the plot twist. As the Empire closed in on the tower, Kanan told the rest of the Specter crew to get to the top, and get out with Hera.

Kanan then sacrificed himself for the team and mission. Kanan put up a much better fight than when he and Ezra fought him earlier. My jaw actually dropped when he sacked himself for the Inquisitor and Tarkin. I, thankfully, did not see it coming. As much as I like Kallus, I hope Tarkin takes over as the Imperial leader of Lothal. I think a change of pace would be fantastic.

All in all, I am very happy with “Call to Action.” If anything, it sets up what could be the run to the season finale, which should be coming relatively soon, since the season two premiere is happening at Star Wars Celebration in April. Then again, releasing only two or three episodes a month if we’re lucky, will just prolong the wait. I hope these episodes are of he same quality, because that would only be a bit of a letdown. That’s how good this episode was, especially compared to what “Vision of Hope” was.
