Review: Star vs The Forces of Evil “Page Turner/Naysaya”

This one’s a real page-turner.

Spoilers Below

Star Butterfly begs Glossaryck to show her a forbidden page in her Book of Spells. When he refuses, she holds his perfect tortilla chip hostage. Of course, he gives in to get it back. However, just after he unlocks the page and is about to turn it, he gets called to the magic council. He has to get to the top of the council building but everything inside the building is broken. Finally, he breaks the one rule of “no magic” and teleports everything to the top floor. Once there, he gets attacked by one of the council members. Finally, Queen Butterfly appears. She tells Glossaryck that something is draining magic and he needs to teach Star faster. Glossaryck refuses and points out to the queen that Star’s training is different from hers because Star is different. Then he notes that she dragged him away from him job, leaving Star alone with an unlocked forbidden page that Star was trying to get Marco to turn. When Glossaryck returns to Star’s room, he finds that Star has read the entire book and is completely “meh” about it. Marco, on the other hand, has turned a bit evil…

Somehow, Marco has grown a second head that tells all of his secrets when Jackie is around. No matter how many times Marco tries to ask Jackie out, he blurts out embarrassing secrets. It turns out that Tom cursed Marco with the Naysaya in order to stop Marco from asking Star out. The curse will run its course but only once it has told all of Marco’s deepest secrets. In order to keep the demon at bay, Marco agrees to give him cereal. But the Naysaya doesn’t keep his promise to shut up. Marco outwits the demon by telling Jackie all of his secrets himself. After everything is out, Jackie still invites him to go to the movies with a group of friends. For some reason, Marco lets Naysaya stick around long enough to watch the movie with them.

Neither of these episodes actually featured Star. Sure, she was in the background for both and had a few lines but she was not the main focus of either story. And both of them were actually interesting. Glossaryck has always been a bit of a mystery and now we got to see behind the scenes a bit of the people ranked above him. Since there hasn’t been an overarching storyline this season, I hope that this draining of magic will come back to give us something bigger than one-shot episodes. Also, I really hope that Marco gets together with Jackie. She has been pretty cool about all of his issues. He deserves someone like that.
