Review: Star vs The Forces of Evil “Bon Bon The Birthday Clown”

I guess the “evil” Star is fighting this season is her romantic feelings for Marco.

Spoilers Below

One hundred years ago, a weird clown died and vowed he would return from the dead. Star, Janna, and Glossaryck have decided to have a séance at the clown’s grave. But Star had agreed to go to a school dance with Marco. Luckily, Jackie asked Marco to go to the dance with her. So Star gets to go to the graveyard and Marco gets a date with Jackie.

Things seem to be going well, at first. However, the dance is so lame that Jackie and Marco decide to go on an actual date instead. Star, driven by feelings of jealousy toward Jackie, uses the “All-Seeing Eye” spell in the dark magic pages of her spellbook. When she sees Marco having a good time with Jackie, things start to go wrong. Star’s wand changes colors and magically jams a wheel on the skateboard the teens are riding, forcing them to wipe out. Alarmed, Star dismisses the eye. As Star tries to explain things to Janna, large rats appear. Then the candles on the shrine Star built for Bon Bon go out. Everyone thinks the clown has returned, at first. They quickly find out that it is only Ludo in a clown costume.

Thankfully, neither Marco nor Jackie were hurt in their fall. On the contrary, the two decide that they are having such a good time that they kiss. But that is when Marco notices the moon briefly change colors. He checks his phone to see that Star has tried to call him 57 times. Immediately, he decides that they need to find her.

Star and Janna fight Ludo and his minions. Using the Mystic Room Suck Transform spell, Star tries to suck Ludo into a black hole. Bon Bon’s ghost is sucked in instead. When Star sees Marco and Jackie arrive, her magic turns green again. Distracted by her envy, Star’s wand gets knocked away from her and she starts to get sucked into the black hole herself. Meanwhile, Ludo’s eagle grabs Star’s spellbook and Ludo’s gang runs away. Marco tries to go after the spellbook but stops when he sees Star in danger. Together with Jackie and Janna, Marco pulls Star to safety before the black hole closes. Realizing that she has lost her spellbook and Glossaryck, Star cries in despair. Marco comforts her with a hug and promises to get the book back.

Back at his hideaway, Ludo opens Star’s spellbook. Glossaryck pledges allegiance to his new master.

I know that the series has been leading up to this moment but I really don’t want Marco and Star to get together. When a show is led by a male and female character, the story almost inevitably falls into some sort of romantic turmoil. This show has the perfect opportunity to allow both characters to have a fulfilling friendship between them while they have fulfilling romantic relationships at the same time. Marco and Jackie are perfect together. While we haven’t really gotten to know Oskar, he would be a great pair for Star. At least for awhile. I hope that the writers aren’t going to fall into they stereotype. The entire premise of the show was based on being different. Please don’t ruin that.
