Review: Mike Tyson Mysteries “Ring of Fire”

The road to hell is paved with monthly newsletters.

Spoilers Below

The team arrives at an empty baseball field to find their client, David (great name!). Seems he lost his wedding ring while playing softball and is this close to pissing himself thinking about what she’ll do if she finds out. After crossing the field looking for it well into the night, nothing comes up and they take him home. He fears the worst, but Marquess assures him that this was an understandable mistake that his wife will forgive him for. As David gets up to head in, renewed confidence in his wife’s ability to forgive, Marquess notices his ring in his seat; apparently it had been in David’s pocket this whole time. Not wanting to undercut his point, Marquess decides to wait for the bad news to be said…only to hear several gunshots coming from the house seconds later and the wife fleeing the scene, gun in hand.

Back at the house, everyone tries to cope with what they just saw: Mike quickly tries to keep his mind on other things, Yung tries to keep him alert that they just witnessed a murder, Marquess is being completely overcome with guilt, and Pigeon is all too eager to keep twisting the knife. Marquess also finds the ring still in his pocket and decides to take the Tolkien approach, that being throwing it into the closest source of molten heat, which in this case is the local steel mill. But in a twist of fate, he also runs into David’s wife, now trying to dispose of the gun. Attempting redemption, Marquess fights her and dumps her into the vat. His conscious clear, he returns home and plans to turn himself in.

…Except the story’s still not done. At the police station, who else should he run into but David, still alive and well. Turns out she DID pull a gun on him, missed, immediately regretted it, emptied the clip, they made up, and she told him she would get rid of the gun and they would start over. But she never made it home. And if she doesn’t come back, he’ll kill himself. WELP.

This certainly had more plot points to it than normal! Though the main focus is clearly on Marquess, who sorta ends up being the main character of this episode. We end up learning a bit more about his past (which may or may not be accurate to history, but I’m not really invested enough to look that up), and also get to see his priority to his ego and self-centeredness on display, even in what should be pretty selfless acts. He keeps himself from giving David his ring just to make sure David follows through on his advice, he kills David’s wife to appease his own guilt, and then decides not to confess to that killing when it turns out he killed for nothing. Didn’t even give David the ring back, even though he still had it! Simply put, Marquess is kind of a dick in this episode, but he’s hilarious, so I think I can let it slide.

Other than that, the other thing that I noticed was Mike’s further efforts to make his business seem more legitimate with all that erroneous paperwork. Though I’m 90% sure that newsletter never got made.

And lastly, the cliffhanger at the end. David’s wife’s melted hand reaches out of the vat, implying that she might still be alive. But with the nature of how this show handles cliffhangers, I’m not putting much stock in this being further explored any time soon. Though if they do, it’s probably gonna be something like Castaway meets…melty gun prone wife. But hey, it means more Mike reviews for me to write!

Speaking of Mike, next episode finally seems to touch on his eagerness to flake on mysteries, and sees him dealing with another David, which is still a great name!
