Reddit AMA Recap: Kris, Rob, & Dave from Cyanide & Happiness

Here’s what we found out.

Kris, Rob, & Dave aka Explosm have had a very busy week promoting Cyanide & Happiness. The guys took part in a live stream viewing of episodes on Buzzfeed video, and they took part in a Reddit AMA session yesterday where the guys answered all sorts of questions regarding the future of the franchise. Kris was actually rather quiet, but Dave and Rob had a lot of good points of interest that you can see below and on their Reddit AMA here.

There’s gonna be a big musical episode coming to C&H S3

Dave-We miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight be working on what you’re talking about as we speak.

Rob-Not quite a music video, but one of our “Season 3: The Pain Wars” episodes is an entire musical, about God & Satan. It’s probably my favorite thing we’ve ever done!

Recommendations on getting into animation business

Rob-The best way to start is to just start, and experiment until you get better. I got into animating by “borrowing” a copy of Flash from the Internet when I was 15. I was terrible at first but I kept working at it, and relying on feedback from people at NewGrounds.com.

NewGrounds.com still has an excellent Flash animation community, it’s worth posting stuff there to get feedback!

If you’re serious about it as a career path, a lot of universities have animation programs nowadays.

On how Season 3 compares to prior seasons

Rob- It’s huger and crazier. It combines all of the characters we’ve built up in Season 1 and 2 (as well as on the YouTube channel) into a grand story. Also one of the episodes is a musical.

It’s the biggest and best thing we’ve ever worked on. Also funniest.

Dave- We really went into The Pain Wars with an attitude of “don’t give a fuck, let’s go all out”, and we wrote stuff that was really off the wall. We think it takes on themes that are very relevant in today’s climate. I should probably preface that by saying this is really kinda the first season that has a complete arc going from beginning to end! We wanted to create more of a continuous story, rather than purely sketch-based stuff. It’s pretty different from Seasons 1/2.

On working with Seeso

Rob-It’s been awesome! We have free reign over the show, and make the entire thing in house with our own team. They hardly ever give us notes, and when they do give notes it’s along the lines of “let’s focus the camera on the guy’s ass” and “we should see more of Hitler”, etc. Seeso’s a blast to work with.

Dave-They gave us absolutely free reign! You’ll especially see that lack of breathing over our shoulder in Season 3. There’s some pretty gross stuff in there.

On potential future projects

Dave-The world is our oyster as far as next steps! We’re entirely open to doing a C&H movie, along with brand new non-C&H projects! We’ve actually got an avatar creator app coming February 18th for mobile! You’ll be able to create a C&H version of yourself for your social media, or whatever! We’ll also have C&H custom emoticons, amongst other things!
