NYCC Recap: ‘Archer’ Panel

There have been a lot of rumors floating around for the upcoming season of Archer most notable of all the insane changes that were coming. I’ve heard it all too. From cancelled rumors to changing the name of the show, but what we got was a rather radical transformation and a good preview of what’s to come.

During the panel, the entire audience got to see the first episode of Archer’s fifth season that looked maybe 90% done but we were able to see what the commotion was about. Yep, apparently the FBI shows up to ISIS and closes the fucker down which sees everybody that used to work there look for new jobs. A very pregnant Lana joins up with Mallory and Sterling to start a drug ring, Cyril goes back to practicing law, Cheryl goes back to being a country music sensation, and Pam goes back to eating (and maybe underground fight clubs).

Of note was Archer taking yet ANOTHER visual leap thanks to Matt Thompson and crew as the backgrounds and action scenes look better than most shit on film. However, those fearing that Sterling and Co. would take on a more serious tone were mistaken, because the back-and-forth banter between Lana and Sterling was just as insane and from the looks of it the fact that we are expecting a child isn’t helping anything. So, why all the changes? Well creator Adam Reed told the audience:

“I just wanted to do something different.”

This is a rather risky proposition, as the show has accrued a whole bunch of awards and nominations from Emmys, Annies, and elsewhere, so the fact that Adam is diving this way is a rather incredulous thought.

Archer is all new this January on FX.
