Netflix Orders Tiffany Haddish Starrer “Tuca & Bertie”

Netflix isn’t done with picking up new adult animation.

From the producers of BoJack Horseman including Lisa Hanawalt and executive producers Noel Bright, Steven A. Cohen, Raphael Bob-Waksberg, and producers Tornante Company and Shadowmachine, Variety is reporting that Netflix has ordered ten episodes of a brand-new series called Tuca & Bertie.

The series will star Tiffany Haddish (Legends of Chamberlain Heights) as the voice of Tuca, a cocky, care-free toucan, and Bertie, an anxious, daydreaming songbird. Both are 30-something year-old bird-women pals who live in the same apartment building.

BoJack Horseman is currently in production for a fifth season set to stream on Netflix, but the franchise has greater aspirations due to recent deals that have seen Netflix carry the show in different international markets AND the fact that the show is being syndicated for US TV networks.

Our Take

BoJack Horseman is an excellent series, but Lisa Hanawalt is officially moving up to the “Seth MacFarlane class” of animation stalwart given that it’s very rare you hear about creators of animated series having multiples airing at the same time. When this series streams, Lisa is in a company that includes MacFarlane, Matt Groening, and pretty much nobody else just yet.
