McDonald’s To Bring Back More Szechuan Sauce Much To The Delight Of “Rick and Morty” Fans

Can we close this?

McDonald’s has officially announced that the famed Szechuan Sauce, the same sauce that became part of a viral sensation last year as a result of the season three premiere of Rick and Morty, will officially be made available in stores this Monday at all participating stores.

McDonald’s, the second largest fast food chain in the world, says that it’s shipping 20 million packets of the Asian-inspired sauce. Szechuan Sauce or Mulan Sauce is a dipping sauce for chicken nuggets and was created to promote the 1998 Disney film, Mulan. The sauce was dormant for 20 years until the “Rickshank Redemption” episode of Rick and Morty came along and sent everyone into a frenzy with reports of fans giving McDonald’s workers a hard time about the lack of sauce made available. Since then, the producers have tried to distance themselves from the controversy surrounding the Szechuan Sauce, all the while fans would spend upwards of a $1000 to get a tub of the sugary sauce.

That said, McDonald’s didn’t think to give anything back to the producers of Rick and Morty or to Adult Swim despite the fact that the show, for free, sent their millennial target audiences to the fast-food chain JUST in time for the restaurant’s return of its Buttermilk Crispy Chicken Tenders that touted a new and improved recipe. Since then, McDonald’s had quietly sold out of the Szechuan Sauce while the third season of Rick and Morty brought with it a whole new set of controversies surrounding women writers, Dan Harmon’s Community workplace harassment allegations, and writer Jessica Gao’s Chinese-American “Dr. Wong” character being voiced by Susan Sarandon which brought with it questions about voice actor white-washing.
