By far the most ambitious animated film of 2017 was Loving Vincent. An animated film visually-inspired by Van Gogh paintings, the film would go on and get critical acclaim to go along with all sorts of accolades and for good reason.
Loving Vincent is a 2017 experimental animated biographical drama film about the life of a painter Vincent van Gogh, and, in particular, about the circumstances of his death. It is the first fully painted animated feature film. The film, written and directed by Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman, is a Polish-UK co-production, funded by the Polish Film Institute, and partially through a Kickstarter campaign. It makes perfect sense that an animated film with all of the accolades that it came with would get a doc-retelling of how the hell the producers pulled this one off. Enter, Good Deed Entertainment’s new doc which is in theaters now and due to hit on home release this summer that showcases all the painstakingly crazy detail these guys went through to get this one done on almost no budget.
Loving Vincent: The Impossible Dream recalls a 10-year journey that brought the world’s first fully painted feature film to the cinema screen. From humble beginnings in a bedroom in an industrial Polish town of Łódź, an idea for a 7-minute short film that would tell the story of Vincent van Gogh through his paintings was conceived. The potential for a truly groundbreaking yet completely unseen project seemed like a huge risk, but when in the hands of two passionate filmmakers willing to risk everything to make their impossible dream come true, nothing could stand in their way.
