‘Hand to God’ gets sued by ‘Abbott & Costello’ Heirs for infringement
Tony nominated Hand to God is being sued by the heirs of the Abbott & Costello for a scene in which the play’s star, Keven Boyer, also a Tony nominee, a teenage puppeteer who tries to impress a girl by performing “Who’s On First” with his sock puppet.
Turns out this routine is inspired by the comedy bit of the same name as done by Abbott & Costello, and the bit was used WITHOUT permission from the estate holders despite the fact that the A&C heirs have tried numerous times to come to some sort of arrangement. The H2G producers more or less ignored the heirs, and BOOM that’s why we have a lawsuit.
A settlement will probably come before we see any real serious legal action, but as of right now the producers of Hand to God seem to be liking the extra attention they are receiving as a result of the suit while the Abbott & Costello team seem to be trying their best in doing the right thing. In a statement to Deadline.com, they even compliment the production, but at the end of the day this is business and ducks have to be put in a row.
Hi Ashley, thank you so much for reading and we love the feedback. Note that on that day we had 14th posts go up and only ten posts show on the front page, so it's possible the preview had already been archived by the time you got to it. One recommendation would be to add our RSS feed to your favorite news aggregator service like Feedly, this way you get all of the latest posts!
