Games Review: Regular Show ‘The Great Prank War’

   heroes

Story:

The Regular Show revisits the episode Prank Wars which Muscle Man swore that he would never prank again.  That is, until, Pops is hurt by a prank gone wrong.  Muscle Man regains the ability to prank and avenge the park and Pops. Meanwhile, Gene is trying to gain power over the park. The story in this game plays as part 2 of  “Prank War”.

The Great Prank War begins with Gene plotting revenge of taking over the park once and for all.  Gene develops a time machine bomb that would help him take away Muscle Man, who is the king of pranks. Without his help, the park stands no chance of winning. During the take over, Benson explains how the gang had no choice but to flee the scene to regroup.

The story continues with Benson discussing what everyone has been doing while the park has been taken over by Gene and his park rangers. We learn how the group tries to harness their own prank powers, and combat against their foes to reclaim their beloved park. As for the ending of the story it did feel as if your typical villain will come back again for revenge but also open the door to create other crazy prank wars.

GamePlay:

The game starts out with only being able to select two default characters, which is Mordecai and Rigby. There are a total of four characters in the game, but Skips and Muscle Man would have to be unlocked after completing two seasons on the calendar. Speaking of seasons, during the game, you have to go through different seasons: Fall,Winter,Spring and Summer. Each of the seasons consist of four stages with a boss fight in the end.

The game will remind you of playing a tower defense game, which your primary objective is to defend your base while attacking the enemies base. Along the way, you want to try and take over the park rangers gun turrets and build your own. Building your own turrets assist you along your fight, making the fights infinitely easier. Each of the turret’s have range meters that can help you plan the optimal distance to kill off the attacking enemies.  If you your base is under attack, you are supplied with an teleport button to go back and help defend your base.

Each character has their own special ability that once unlocked during your mission will regenerate and can be used over and over. The max level for each character is up to five, but the downside is that each level you complete, you must start over again at zero. You then have to unlock your special abilities once again. When picking Mordecai, he has the ability to attack long range by launching rolls of toilet paper at the enemy. His special, however, creates lighting toilet rolls at level three, but when reaching level five he can launch a robotic paper roll to inflict massive damage. You guessed it, he turns into a toilet paper Thor.

Rigby carries a giant tuna fish which brings a good amount of damage when up close. His special when reaching level three creates a exploding tuna, that can clear out a large range of enemies. As for Skips, his weapon is a spoon with an pie at the end of it that is only effective for mid to close range combat. But his special, when unlocked at level three, can drop a large pie to clear out a range of enemies. With Muscle Man, he has the ability to hit enemies with a towel whip. But when reaching level three the towel can produce more damage. I did notice that some of the level five special abilities did not cause as much damage of what level three can do depending on the character. Overall it comes down to what two characters you feel best would be effective on your plan of attack.

Controls:

This game has very simple controls that consists of pointing anywhere on the screen and watching your character move to their destination. You just point and click for the special moves as well. If you’re into that sort of game play, then you shouldn’t have a hard time picking this up at all.

You can, however, zoom in and out of the combat to see more on your screen while planning your next attack just by pinching your fingers together or apart. Even though this is a point and self move game the game sometimes can become too sensitive and you can easily overshadow your objective or enemies that are flowing onto the screen.

Final Verdict:

I thought the game was fun in the very beginning. However, The Great Prank War could easily get repetitive and makes you want to complete it very fast. This game could easily have been another episode for the show, but instead was created as an interactive episode to fight along side of your favorite characters of the show. This game, however, can keep you busy while on the toilet for only so long before you want to move on to something else. The simplicity of the game is easily exposed after about 15 minutes of playing. For instance, once you take over all of the turrets in the park and use them against your enemies, and you can never die in the game. It’s like the game hit it’s own easy button. Otherwise this is a title that is good for killing a little bit of time, posing no challenge at all.

If you’re a big fan of the show and can overlook the simplicity of the game as well some of the flaws, then i recommend you picking this one up for your collection.  As for everyone else you may want to wait until it becomes app of the day and you can download it for free if it is ever offered.
