This has been a HELL of a year for cancellations on Comedy Central has it not? First, Ugly Americangets the boot, and now Entertainment Weekly is reporting that after the second half of Futurama airs the show will NOT be renewed for an eighth season. The last thirteen episodes will begin airing on June 19th @ 10pm EST and will end on September 4th. According to a statement to EW the cancellation did not come as a surprise to executive producer David X. Cohen who said:

“I felt like we were already in the bonus round on these last couple of seasons, so I can’t say I was devastated by the news,” Cohen tells EW. “It was what I had expected two years earlier. At this point I keep a suitcase by my office door so I can be cancelled at a moment’s notice.”

You would think all the memes, all the classic characters like Zoidberg, Fry, Farnsworth, Bender, and Lana, that THAT would be enough to keep the show afloat on Comedy Central for another season. That said, Matt Groening is hopeful the series could go elsewhere:

“We’ve been in this situation before and it’s tempting when you’re doing episodes that are as good or better than anything you’ve ever done to continue doing it,” Groening tells EW. “We’re catching our breath and seeing what the fans have to say. The experience of this show has been so much fun from the very beginning to now — everybody is so happy to work on this show — that it’d be a shame if we all went our separate ways… We would love to continue. We have many more stories to tell. But if we don’t, this is a really great way to go out… I think these episodes are the best ones we’ve ever done.”

So, there you have it folks. No more Futurama, but that doesn’t mean animated comedy goes away for good. Still on the slate is the returns of Brickleberry, South Parkand new shows like TripTank and GajillionairesThat said, if I work for a network like Syfy, I am finding a way to put this on my network. Adult Swim could be possible, but how about the other comedy network that Turner owns TBS? I think they could be a dark horse here as they already have reruns of Family Guy and have fooled around with original animated in the past (Neighbors from Hell). Your thoughts?
