English Dub Review: Lupin the Third “The First Supper”

Mixed messages.

Overview (Spoilers Below)

MI6 decided to clone Leonardo Da Vinci who then proceeds to arrange a dinner with Jigen, Goemon, Fujiko, Rebecca, Robson, Zenigata, Nyx and Gibbons at the “Holy Mary of Grace” church in Milan to reenact his famed The Last Supper painting. Everyone is well fed, and when Lupin realizes who is behind painting the nine dinner guests all over town and takes chase but isn’t able to grab the perp.

Our Take

The overall plot of the episode is over-the-top, but when you start to sit back and think about how culturally indoctrinated this series is, it’s really quite fascinating. I love the producers’ takes on famous Italian landmarks and art and then to have someone use Leonardo Da Vinci’s influences in the construction of portraits in Lupin the Third has to be quite the undertaking. That said, the episode also features Japanese anime’s fascinations with large quantities of food which is entertaining for all of two minutes until it gets a bit much. Anyone who has been to Italy knows that meals aren’t served in large quantities like this episode presents.
