English Dub Review: Dragonball Super “Goku, Surpass the Super Saiyan God!”

We’re back after Adult Swim’s April Fool’s prank blindsided everyone last week.

Spoilers Below

The intense fight between Goku and Beerus remains ongoing as Both are trading punches, kicks and energy attacks towards one another and neither of them is backing down and much like the last episode, their energy continues to reverberate across both the earth and even in the universe.

The first half of this episode is primarily just Goku and Beerus in a power struggle unleashing their energy attacks. which honestly drags on a bit and neither of them seems to be 1-upping the other. They could’ve added a few more things here and there, but I’ll take it over pointlessly abundant filler that the old DB series was guilty of.

After at least 10 mins of Beerus and Goku’s blasting-exchange, their energy dissipates and a bright gold-like explosion that engulfs the Earth which puts everyone in a state of panic, but the glow quickly fades. There are at least several comedic moments with many of them being Hercule-related but the funniest moment is when Whis simplistically explains to Hercule in “smaller words” what’s gong on.

Since Goku & Beerus are left at a stalemate, the two decide to do a more nonsensical punching again. This is when the episode gets a little more exciting. I’m not sure about you, but I always prefer DB episodes when the fists fly. Although the Cell vs Gohan Kamehameha battle from the “Cell Saga” worked in terms of suspense.

As the two characters trade blows for a while again, they’re evenly matched once more as it doesn’t seem to be any advantage on either side. The turning point comes however when Goku’s “Super Saiyan God” form dissipates and Goku is transformed back to a normal gold-glowing Super Saiyan.

However, Goku’s body has managed to absorb enough God power and can still hold his own despite even not having the red glowing aura or hair. As the two continue their punching exchange, they both seem to be entertained and the episode ends in cliffhanger fashion with both of them smiling at the excitement of their ongoing fight.

Our Take

DB Super cranks out another decent episode but could’ve been a little better. It appears the fight might be ending very soon or at least I hope so since I’m itching for season 1 to get to the “Resurrection ‘F” arc as quickly as possible. Also, the Hercule & Whis scene was easily one of the funniest parts of the Dub and points to Ian Sinclair for capturing Whis’ dry humor to an English audience.
