English Dub Review: Chaos;Child “Heads or Tails”

“Could be identity crisis but I can’t buy this
Reality bites but that’s what life is”

Spoilers Below

The episode begins After the horrific events of episode 7 on November 1st with Takuru & Nono being dropped off back at the Clinic after Yui’s funeral and this is where Nono finally reveals what she’s been so secretive about.

A good chunk of this episode is spent on Nono delving into Senri’s backstory. her unhinged mother, her isolation, the Hospital visits that performed those questionable experiments, Ect. But later found a stable happy friendship thanks to Nono.

On the night of the earthquake, Senri’s Mother & Nono both die in front of Senri from the earthquake’s aftermath right in front of her. At first, she feels survivor’s guilt but then in a bright light, changed into Nono’s appearance to hide from the Doctor’s and Senri assumed her Identity ever since. In other words… Nono was Senri the whole time!

Senri/Nono now regrets her long charade and blames herself for Yui’s horrific death but hardens her resolve to not lie anymore and help Takuru in his quest for answers and find whoever is responsible.

Two days after that, It intercuts between both Takuru & Detective Shindou who despite being in different locations, both deduce that the murderer theoretically used mind-control as a killing method. It also turns out that November 4th is when the last incident will happen. So Takuru prepares against this threat by having Hinae stay at the clinic.

Takuru later gets a call about Shinji but unlike the previous people who died under mind control, Shinji is still alive. Since Mio believe’s Shinji is still under mind-control, getting him to talk could put his life at risk. But Shinji doesn’t care if it will stop the killer and begins to remember that two people within Takuru’s club told him to kill Yui but before he could give out their names he Immediately goes into shock and faints. The detective in response to this, warns Takuru not to do anything stupid.

Finally, we cut to Takuru back home and is told by Uki that Nono went missing after hearing an oddly specific sound in a video which could be a lead in one of their cases. The episode ends in abrupt cliffhanger fashion when Takuru quickly figures out what this sound is and tries to contact Senri/Nono but leaves when she doesn’t pick up her phone.

Our Take.

In retrospect, I may have overreacted a bit towards the last episode when I compared Yui’s death to another day at the office for Joss Whedon’s gratuitously sadistic writing style. The twist surely blindsided me with the “Senri is Nono” reveal and hopefully we got a substantial amount of info out of all of it. I’m more curious what the hell the sound was that Takuru recognized but let’s hope the next episode will give us those answers.
