A wild imagination.

Overview:

Starting things out is “Magic Pencil” by Scott Nickel and Walter Pax. While wandering through the forest, Finn and Jake find a talking magic pencil. It claims that whatever it draws will come to life, and Finn has a hard time deciding what to draw. The pencil is soon revealed to be mischievous and starts drawing wildly. When Finn and Jake try to stop it, it draws a gag on Finn and wings on Jake. Finn manages to catch it in a box, stopping it for good.

Second up is “Visions of Paternity” by Ryan Cady and Jorge Monlongo, where a grizzled Marceline and the main duo fight their way through hordes of monsters to reach the throne room. Once there, Marceline confronts a monstrous Hunson, and they have a great battle. Marceline tells her dad that she’s not attacking him because he’s a jerk, but because he’s a bad father. Hunson wakes up in a panic and calls Marceline to make sure that it was just a dream.

The third is “Dream a Little Dream of Ooo” by Steve Foxe and Meg Omac, where Finn and Jake receive a Dream Harp as a reward for their help. They accidentally try it out on Peppermint Butler, and see that his dream is to become an overlord. Manfried is next, and he dreams of having a harem of other pinatas. Jake asks Prismo to take them to the Cosmic Owl, and he dreams of something else entirely.

In “Vampyre Tide” by Daniela Vicoso, Finn and Jake are invited by Marceline to a vampire concert. They’re afraid, so Marceline transforms them so they can go undercover. They shortly find out that it’s a concert for non-bloodsucking vampires, and the two end up flustered.

Our Take:

Overall, a very fun collection. A favorite is Visions of Paternity, with Hunson’s dream being right out of the 80s. It’s wild to see Finn, Jake, and Marceline outfitted with studs and metal outfits. While it started out as action, it ended up being very heartfelt when the dream turned out to be an anxiety dream of Hunson himself. Short, but sweet.

Also, learn from Spongebob. Don’t trust those magic pencils.
