Chozen is my mans. I interviewed the team.

chozen

It’s 1:20AM. I finally found my way home from the goddamn city [of NY] and have managed to drunkenly knock over everything in my living room in a way that only someone aiming to do the exact opposite possibly could. In order to prep for this wordfuck, I’ve just constructed a sandwich that I in no way nutritionally need to eat. An integral part of that sandwich happens to be Wise potato chips. That’s right bitch, there’s chips in the sandwich. Get. On. My. Level. You know who else would have done the same goddamn thing? My man Chozen.  As a fellow white rapper (not kidding) let me be the first to welcome you to our world of non-giving-a-fuckery.

You probably haven’t heard of Chozen (the show named after it’s main character), although you will probably recognize some of its  cast members – namely Bobby Moynihan  (from SNL among other notables – including an episode of Aqua Teen) and Method Man (from being one of the best fucking rappers ever – I mean ever.  How many other rappers do you know did an original song with Biggie [while he was alive] and was a founding member of the Wu Tang Clan?  The answer is none. Protect ya neck son. Protect ya god damn neck).

Word.

I recently had a chance to sit down with some of the brains and voices behind this new toon on FX (which is actually really fucking funny – a fact I know because I was treated to the first episode [early]  (get like me bitch) at NY Comic Con this year, and the dudes had some shit to say.

Jesus I’m going to feel like dog shit when I wake up for work tomorrow.

First I spoke with Grant Dekernion and Tom Brady (who is not Tom Brady – fuck that guy), the creators of the show.  Tom had to say this ’bout FX and the new FXX network that the show will debut on:

“This is the right show for the right network [in terms of] content and subject matter … FX seems to invest in voices, in this case it’s Grant’s – from his brain – and if they buy into it, they support it, let you grow, and nurture it – as opposed to places that tend to over develop [projects] forever until it loses what was so originally great about it.”

By ‘voice’ here, what Tom meant was having something to say (in your content) while coming from a distinct perspective (through your delivery). Yeah I know.  I’m deep son.  This shouldn’t be surprising (to hear about FX) judging by their fellow channel-mates ‘It’s Always Sunny In Philedelphia’ and ‘The League’ which have become huge hits undoubtedly because of their off-beat and impressively original characters and plot-lines.  If you can guess that I’m a huge ‘It’s Always Sunny’ fan by how hard I just fellated their show, then hats off to you – ’cause I love that shit.

Grant added this ish about the musical aspect of the show (raps) and how they knock it out:

“I’ve produced hip-hop [before] so I write all the songs, and then I record all the songs.  We do it as we write, so we can have the writing influence the songs and vice-versa”

I found this pretty interesting (that Grant is writing all of the raps [no disrespect dude]) seeing as they had THE Johnny Blaze on their cast – but, as he put it himself “I don’t think they wanna pay for it – honestly”.  Chozen can’t afford that Meth steez.  Understandable.

My man Jodi asked some poignant type shit regarding Chozen being a gay character (which he is) and Grant chirped back this assortment of letters:

“I think [being gay] is one aspect of who [Chozen] is, [but] I don’t think it’s the most important.  I think that if you were to meet this guy, and has were real, the first thing he would tell you is “I rap’ … to me he’s just a very honest character – that’s what he likes, that’s what he wants, and he’s not afraid to talk about it – I feel we should just be even and embrace it”

I actually really liked this answer.  The character just happens to be gay because he’s gay.  They aren’t trying to prove any points or gain any ground, he’s just a gay guy and that’s all there is to it.  I can dig it.  Do what you do bruh.

Right, so next I interviewed  Bobby Moynihan but I totally forgot to turn on the goddamn recorder thing because alcohol.  Here is an interview that somebody else did.  It’s kinda goobery but I mean, it’s certainly a something – whereas I have nothing.

Great, now that’s covered.  Sorry Bobby, nothing personal bro.  Hopefully this will be a good ‘i’m sorry’ gift here: click here if you are Bobby Moynihan.  Oh yeah dog, that’s me and Brooke Hogan.  You’re welcome.  She needs my love.  You can probably meet her because you’re on TV box.  Use those connects and hook a brotha up dog.  Not joking.

Now this:

Before you read this next part, click here and let it play while you keep reading.  That ain’t my YouTube channel, but it will work.

Meeting Meth was exactly how I thought it was going to be.  He’s a super down to earth, chill as fuck, big boss dog from NY who’s having a blast playing a role (close to his heart – seeing as it’s a rapper) on a cartoon.  He is living two of my dreams at one time.  I don’t get starstruck so I wasn’t drooling over the dude but I could definitely feel some deep ass vibes comin’ from the homey that had me pretty goddamn inspired.

So what did the Ticallion Stallion have to say about his new role and where his voice came from:

“The voice comes from a family member of RZA’s …  an OG [who] smokes backwoods cigars and it’s gotten to the point now where you can’t even hear him because his voice is so low”

J-dog and I thought he sounded a lot like Ken Kaniff, Meth concurred.

Will Meth ever write raps for his own character (Phantasm)?

“Since I’m playing a character and I’m not Method Man – no.  But you know what, if they give me a shot to – maybe.  It takes me a lot longer [than Grant] to write though.”

So Meth isn’t writing – so what does the pro think ’bout Grant’s rhymes on the show?

“Dude does a pretty decent job.  I was pleasantly surprised, because on paper it didn’t look that way.  I was like ‘oh wow – thats not going to rhyme’ … but then when he [rapped it] I was like ‘oh shit, okay nice’ – okay lets go”

Word.

We talked with Meth for awhile and he dropped all kinds of knowledge but yall don’t really deserve that right now.  Maybe I’ll post the entire interview up (audio) if people really want it.  Otherwise, wait for the show bitches.

LET METHOD MAN RAP ON CHOZEN 2014 FOR PRESIDENT.

I have a goddamn headache.
