Blu-Ray Review: Sausage Party

A solid post-election cure possibly mired with controversy.

With close to $140 million in box office receipts and whispers of an Oscar bid, Sausage Party’s latest home release will certainly add to the resume that is the successful release of the first original R-rated fully CG animated film.

Let’s start with the good. Sausage Party comes filled to the brims with special features, especially with the Blu-Ray version of the home release. In the release, we get some super funny behind-the-scenes silliness with “Good Food Gag Reel” and “Line-O-Rama”, both of which are like watching Jackass stunts post successful completion. For those wanting to learn something about the movie-making industry, “Shock and Awe” is excellent, and featurettes like “The Booth” and “The Great Beyond” help fill in the gaps as to how this film really was put together. Maybe most impressive was “The Pitch”, which features an old interview with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg talking up the first mention of the concept of Sausage Party. Actually, I take back my previous statement, the most impressive part of the special features is listening to Seth and Evan talk. When these guys go, you can tell they are absolutely blood-brothers in the literal and figurative sense. I can’t explain it, but listening to these guys in conversation is like watching the same brain shared among two different people, much in the same way actors talk of working with the Wachowskis.

Unfortunately, those who were critical of Sausage Party’s recognition of animators are NOT going to be happy about this home release. Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan are represented in the special features, but those looking for any behind-the-scenes featuring the animators of the film will be disappointed. As a result of a sore subject, I do think the fans get slighted here because we never get to see how the character designs of the Sausage Party characters were developed, nor no sign of the hard-working animators working on completing this film. As a matter of fact, there is no mention of Nitrogen Studios anywhere in the special features…odd to say the least.

In any case, fans of Sausage Party will certainly be happy with the home release. The extended ending isn’t that great, but the featurettes were excellent. Unfortunately, it’s the home release’s greatest strength that leaves wide open a controversial wound which only slights the animation fans.
