So you can check out a full review of the Robot Chicken / DC Comics special here. The major point for this write-up is the Blu-Ray release is worth the around $15 to get it. The quick answer is yes, but that depends on what you value on a home purchase. If extra features are your game…then this thing’s worth it. Let’s look at some of the features:

The Making of the RC/DC special:

For anyone sending me countless emails as to what it takes to break into the industry most noted the stop-mo one, this behind-the-scenes featurette is certainly for you. From writing and animating to producing and directing this is a legit deal. A couple of things of note that certainly surprised me. For starters I LOVE the fact that Seth Green is still in on a lot of nook and crannies when producing Robot Chicken after all these seasons and more so was nice to see him in some interviews completely shaven (seriously, in all the dads promos he looks like he never shaves). I’m actually curious to see in future home releases how Seth’s attention to detail as he takes on more projects. Big shout out to friend of the site Michael Granberry getting a chance to show off his skills and I was pretty impressed with the fact that not only does he do all of this Robot Chicken, he still has time to work on Zombies vs Ninjas of which is pretty much is one man band. I love seeing Zeb Wells’ quick growth as a writer, and the rest of the crew. The one feature I was kind of hoping to see SOME sort of a look at Steven Tyler with someone asking him what the fuck was he on when he re-recorded vocals for ‘I don’t want to miss a thing’.

Aquaman Origins:

Meh…not that great. Seth Green, Matthew Senreich and the others talk up the fabled heroes’ origins. AQUAMAN GOT MADE SKILLS!

Chicken Nuggets:

IMMEDIATELY after I read that there were Chicken Nuggets on here, I went to Mickey D’s to get some. Whilst eating those tiny morsels of deliciousness I came to see that the feature was more or less like an interactive pop-up feature that lets you click on the Robot Chicken and get some sort of commentary on the scene.

Commentaries:

Even besides the Chicken Nuggets, there are more commentaries to be had of which in this case features the writers, actors, and producers.

DC Entertainment Tour:

BY FAR my favorite special on the release which is just Matt and Seth hanging out with Geoff Johns at DC as he gives the guys the full tour. What blew me away was Geoff’s attention to detail when given anything. Like of course the producers of Robot Chicken are going to raid the toy closets (both produced toys and un-produced) but hearing Geoff talking specific features of toys really is rather awesome. Seriously, I could watch a three hour doc of JUST this.

Stoopid Alter Egos:

This was alright, not sure why it was on the release though as this could have just been a Youtube deal. Basically, it shows all of the parties that took place and crazy antics post the completion of the DC Comics special.

Outtakes:

Crazy cut scenes of the voice actors going nuts in the studio. Alex Borstein is always the funniest at this type of stuff as her comedy wit is so fast I can’t even keep up because I’m laughing so much.

Cut Sketches:

Of all the sketches on here I really want to see I really want to check out Hawkman Birdman Elevator and Teen Titans Prom. Other than that you can kinda tell why these sketches got cut, but it’s nice hearing from Doug Goldstein, the great Zeb Wells, and others on why a sketch may have not been finished.

5.2 Questions

This looked like more of a DC produced thing that was just kinda thrown in there. It’s kinda neat but Geoff Johns certainly keeps his answers safe. And I think Seth Green should have specified which flavor of Doritos he likes best.

Overall, a rather strong release and I think the $15 price tag is rather fair for the Blu-Ray given everything that’s on here. Seth and the crew are all over this one and it shows in the quality of the special features and as such definitely recommend this as a strong buy. I would have liked a bit more variety like maybe instead of commentaries we could have gotten more interviews with the cast on whether or not they were fans of DC Comics and whatnot.
