“Betches” Animated Series In Works At Comedy Central

Oooo…

Inspired by the popular Instagram account, THR is reporting that Comedy Central is producing an animated comedy series in conjunction with Emma Roberts attached to voice the lead character.

Betches is described as an irreverent show about three millennial women navigating their twenties in New York, calling shit out as they see it and daring to say out loud what everyone is already thinking.

Newcomer Rachel Koller will write the script for the project, which hails from Bunim/Murray and All Screen Productions, a division of Access Entertainment. Her and Roberts will executive produce, alongside Betches founders Jordana Abraham, Aleen Kuperman and Samantha Fishbein; Bunim/Murray’s Gil Goldschein and Kesila Childers; and All Screen Productions’ John Cheng, with Carli Haney producing.

Our Take

The series is said to be an attraction for millennial women which would be a great way to differentiate the network in an increasingly male-dominated adult animation space. Betches could be a fantastic premiere right after say Inside Amy Schumer or Broad City and not feel out of place. I think this is kinda what Comedy Central wanted from last year’s partnership with a popular female-driven social net but hasn’t really come to fruition yet.

Comedy Central canceled THREE animated series last year, Legends of Chamberlain Heights,  Jeff & Some Aliens, and The Gorburger Show leaving just South Park as the only veteran animated series expected to have new episodes sometime later this year.
