Animation Winners and Losers of Comic Con 2016

So we’ve had a couple of weeks to think this through. But, what did we like and what did we not like? Find out here.

Winners

Comedy Central

In years’ past, Comedy Central has been largely absent from Comic Cons, whether it has been New York or San Diego, the network hardly put a ton of effort into promoting new animated programs and the results are there as the network hasn’t had a third season pickup for an animated series since Brickleberry.

Fortunately, that seems to be changing now, as the network has picked up Legends of Chamberlain Heights for a second season and we haven’t even seen an episode yet. Moreover, the series had a fantastic panel at the Indigo Ballroom featuring Erykah Badu and cast/crew of the series.

Then there was South Park. The panel, the outside attractions, the playable demo of the game on the show floor, trust me this franchise was well represented for the upcoming 20th season. (Did I mention there was a SHIT TON of South Park merchandise to be had?)

Adult Swim

The network was all over the place with screenings that took place both indoors, outdoors, in stadiums, on lawns, you name it…Adult Swim was definitely in tow. Yes, Rick and Morty was the star, and the franchise had shown so bright, I don’t even think a lot of the attendees of Indigo Ballroom even came out remembering the other panels.

Toonami was well-represented with previews for Samurai Jack and upcoming acquisitions like Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures and One-Punch Man getting a lot of press. But, in terms of news, we didn’t get a ton. No firm premiere dates for the big franchises, but the rest of 2016 looks very solid for Adult Swim.

Archer

I almost gave this network’s Comic Con presence a mixed review, but with panels both inside and outside, and Archer shit all over the lawn, the network’s sole animated effort had some good representation.

Mixed Results

FOX

fox

On one-hand, we got a shit-ton of Son of Zorn. From the trolleys to the building wraps, FOX’s new animated/live-action hybrid was well-represented. But, other than Bob’s Burgers, it seems as if FOX has kind of put the rest of their animated comedies in a corner and forgotten about them. That said, I thought American Dad (20th Century FOX/TBS) and The Simpsons made the best of it with solid panels that featured give-aways and whatnot. Oh yea, and Family Guy was there (runs away).

Batman: The Killing Joke

TheKillingJokeAnimatedFirstLook

On one-hand, we were screened a movie where the first 30 minutes was the shittiest thing I’ve ever seen. But, we can’t deny the box office success and social media attention that was brought about when Batman: The Killing Joke premiered. 75% of the film is actually very good, but the first bit of it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth the likes of which probably won’t go away for a long time.

Losers

Anime

funimation

With AnimeExpo’s attendance growing in droves and becoming more important to the industry, I’m starting to wonder about the importance of anime at Comic Con San Diego. Don’t get me wrong, there were TONS of panels for just about everything Funimation and the other guys had to offer, but really only Adult Swim produced any newsworthy moments for the vertical.

Sausage Party

Sausage_Party

This isn’t so much a knock on the movie as it is on the marketing efforts from Sony Pictures. Yea, there was a panel and a screening, but with the movie coming out in a few weeks, you would think a greater effort would’ve been put in to make sure everyone knew that fact. Instead, I think I saw more out of Aliens which is a movie that’s been out for 30 years than I did for anything Sausage Party. Oh yea, and the sausages running around didn’t do much for me, and I think there was a food truck elsewhere, but you’re gonna need more than that to make me forget that I can just wait a week, beat the crowds, and see Suicide Squad (not me personally, but other movie-goers).

Streaming Services

netflix

Ok, Hulu pitched in a bit for South Park, but you would think Netflix would want people to know that BoJack Horseman Season Three is streaming now. I didn’t even see a sticker for poor BoJack, and that’s the best animated series on television right now. I also think new services like Fullscreen and Seeso could’ve made an effort especially with the latter having some pretty good animated comedies available right now.
