ADULT SWIM PICKS UP ‘HAROLD AND KUMAR’ ANIMATED SERIES…PLUS OTHERS

Deadline.com has just sent out word of the slate of animated programming that has just been picked up by Adult Swim with the headline being the previously reported Harold and Kumar animated series. After the jump get the full slate of news shows coming soon for Adult Swim and my take on each of them.

Untitled Animated Harold & Kumar Project (In Development) – An animated version of the eponymous blockbuster stoner comedy series. Produced by Lionsgate.

Obviously it says “Untitled” right now but I’d be a monkey’s uncle if this thing just wasn’t called Harold and Kumar: The Animated Series as that’s what most movie turned animated properties do. Looks like Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg are returning to write and produce the series with Kal Penn and John Cho on board to help produce and lend their vocal talents. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris return AS Neil Patrick Harris seeing as how he’s done a BUNCH of shit for Adult Swim and Cartoon Network over the years.

Rick & Morty – A genius inventor grandfather and his less than genius grandson, and the journeys in life they share. From Dan Harmon (Community, Channel 101) and Justin Roiland. (30-minute animated)

Community is moving to Fridays on NBC next season which means its probably on its way to being cancelled. Alas, we get the first of the post-Community projects from creator Dan Harmon and if I were solely judging from the log line this show sounds like a deranged take on UP.

Colonel Wallace (Working Title) – An eccentric southern fried chicken magnate and his adventures with his family. Created by Greg Cohen (Conan O’Brien, King of the Hill, TV Funhouse). (15-minute animated)

Greg Cohen has a nice resume if you take a look at it.  He’s well versed in both animated television(King of the Hill, Beavis and Butthead)  and live action having helped put together Pretend Time and Imprortant Things with Demetri Martin. The premise sounds none too dissimilar to Bobs Burgers but that’s just an initial take. Could change…

Coffin Dodgers – A group of misfit grumps get into Animal House-style trouble at a cozy suburban retirement home. From Dave Silverstein and Matt Jeser (Drawn Together). (30-minute animated)

Having already done Drawn Together,Napoleon Dynamite, and a bunch of other shows, long time partners Dave and Matt have had a mixed bag of success and its even more interesting that this concept sounds somewhat similar to Drawn Together which believe me isn’t  a bad thing because that show was funny as hell.

King Star King – King Star King is a modern day he-man who’s half-warrior, half-idiot. From artist JJ Villard (Monsters Vs. Aliens) and Eric Kaplan (Big Bang Theory). (15-minute animated)

Meh…we’ll see.

Rolling With Dad – A brilliant, but disabled man deals with his much less intelligent family. From Seth Grahame-Smith (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies;Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter; Tim Burton’s Dark ShadowsThe Hard Times of RJ Berger) and David Katzenberg (The Hard Times of RJ Berger). (30-minute animated)

Animated comedies starring a whole family are common, but if Adult Swim is picking this up it must be unique as they have the syndication rights to all of the Seth MacFarlane shows, King of the Hill, and others but RJ Berger was a terrible show so its tough to gauge how this one’s gonna come about.
