‘@Achewood’ TV series on the way?

achewood

Bill Plympton, Matt Groening (The Simpsons), and Achewood creator Chris Onstad. What do all these people have in common?  They all hail from Portland, Oregon, so when I saw Chris tweeting up a storm this week in LA about him pitching an animated show to a bunch of networks,  I honestly thought…can lightning strike three times??  This past year we’ve actually been talking up a growing trend in that web comic properties are slowly but surely being picked up for animated shows and not by small fry networks either. Anchoring FOX’s Animation Domination HD lineup is Axe Cop a web comic property we’ve been writing quite a bit about already this year what with not only their pickup but their Rugburn show. Then our biggest story of the last month has been web comic sensation Cyanide and Happiness passing on working with Comedy Central due to creative control issues and have instead opted to go the crowd sourcing route to get their show done. And now Achewood is being shopped to different networks. So which networks would pick up the popular comic?

One would have to think the front runner here would be Adult Swim. The network’s sterling history of letting their producers create TV shows pretty much on their own terms without fear of much network angst due to the fact that most of their programming is midnight or later. The network has an insatiable rabid fan base that when given a property they enjoy, can certainly lead the Achewood series to a path of greatness. Downside of Adult Swim, is that sometimes they take a show, air it, then after its aired they green light the show for a second season, but we wait an additional year to see it again!  How about FOX’s ADHD?? No one has been better at developing prime time cartoons cartoons with shows like Family Guy and The Simpsons, but ADHD will be the network’s first foray into an alt-flavored collection of cartoons geared towards a different type of audience that might be wary of the News Corp attempt at being cool (see IGN and Myspace). The dark horse here could be Comedy Central of whom we know was interested in Cyanide and Happiness and as such may want a second crack at adapting another web comic.

So, yea….do you kids that an animated television series is just what the doctor ordered for Achewood?? If so which characters would YOU be most stoked to see??? Check out a trailer below to wonder what MAY be!
