REVIEW: BOB’S BURGERS “Mother Daughter Laser Razor”

Grab your razors and start your lasers cuz Bob’s is going steady for the new year!

Spoilers Below

Linda is annoyed because Louise clearly likes Bob more than her. Yep, despite her attempts at playing Twister or reading books, Louise doesn’t seem to thrilled with the idea of hanging out with her mom. Tina on the other hand is close to her mom, and it shows when she gets her first signs of leg hair of which Linda tries to help her shave off, but not before she gets into another argument with Louise over their now torrential relationship. Turns out Linda is trying to get closer to her daughter by consulting with a blog about how she can help her relationship blossom with Louise. To further help the cause, Linda takes Louise to a seminar in hopes of improving their relationship. Unfortunately, all of the activities come off as corny and if it weren’t or the fact that Linda was paying her, Louise would have high-tailed it out of there by now. As such, Linda is in the running for most valuable mommy award, and Louise gets put in a closet forced to watch Freaky Friday.

After the movie, the parents go in the close to try and console their kids, but instead they get the switcheroo while Louise goes off to play laser tag with her new friend. The parents soon escape and take part in the tag match where we learn laser-tag works a heck of a lot better in mother-daughter bonding than any seminar!

With Linda at the seminar with Louise, there is no one to help Tina with her leg pubes, so Bob reluctantly agrees to help shave her legs.  That said, Bob opts to take her to a salon to try and remove the leg hair via waxing, but when Tina gets nervous, Bob has to take part in it too so as to calm his daughter. Surprisingly, post operation, Bob and Tina start to like the hairless feel and Gene wants in on the action despite having no leg hair.  Tina eventually gets depressed about the fact that her former leg hairs were friends and as such she beings to miss them.  Also, shaving your leg makes them very itchy…

This week’s Bob’s Burgers probably shows the one weakness in the show’s otherwise stellar arsenal…dual plots. Bob’s works best when it feels like its the Belchers versus the world, whereas trying to do two plots with this FOX franchise doesn’t always to seem to be for the better. For example, the plot with Louise and Linda seemed rather run-of-the-mil comparatively speaking to prior Bob’s episodes as it certainly brings to mind all of the Family Guys and Simpsons that did similar plots…hell American Dad does the father/son bonding thing every week! That said, the Tina plot was more like a typical Bob’s and I probably would have preferred seeing more of this story unfold versus what we got. Tina feeling bad for leg hairs that she at one point feared would ruin her social life is an interesting concept because unlike just about every animated show this one deals with a coming of age scenario with a socially awkward little girl that is dealing with peer pressure in a humorous and light-hearted way. Oh yea, and the Terminator 2  influenced gag with Tina was AWESOME
